Buccaneers Fall in Season Opener at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A strong first half from Syracuse set the tone as Charleston Southern dropped its season opener, 5-0, Friday afternoon at SU Soccer Stadium.
 
The Orange struck early when Anna Croyle scored in the ninth minute off an assist from Ashley Rauch. Less than 10 minutes later, Rauch doubled the lead with an unassisted strike, then converted a penalty kick just 40 seconds later to make it 3-0. Syracuse added goals from Mia Klammer in the 26th minute and Olivia Bozzo in the 37th to close out the scoring.
 
Charleston Southern tightened defensively after the break, holding Syracuse scoreless in the second half while generating three shots and earning two corners. Jillian Brown placed both of her attempts on target, but the Orange goalkeepers combined for a clean sheet.
 
Avery Mason made four saves in goal for the Buccaneers, and 18 CSU players saw action in the season opener. The Buccaneers finished with 46% possession and were whistled for just six fouls.
