Bucs Overcome First Quarter Deficit; Reach 10 Conference Wins for Second Time in School History

CHARLESTON, S.C. - After falling behind early, the Charleston Southern women's basketball team overcame a 21-6 first quarter deficit on Saturday to defeat the Radford Highlanders 60-50 in the Buc Dome.

This was the third time this season that the Buccaneers (14-15, 10-6 in conference) have overcome a double-digit deficit. Charleston Southern trailed 21-9 at the end of the first quarter but went to work in the second quarter. Not only did they overcome their deficit, but they outscored the Highlanders (13-16, 10-6 in conference) 21-2 in the second quarter to take a 30-23 lead into the locker room.

From the end of the first quarter and into the second quarter, the Buccaneers went on an 11-0 run capped off by a three-point field goal from Madison Adamson to trim their deficit to 21-17. The lone basket from Radford in the second quarter came at the 7:12 mark to put them back ahead 23-17. After that, the Buccaneers finished the quarter on a 13-0 run with three-point field goals from Caelan Ellis and Catherine Alben as time expired in the quarter.

In the third quarter, the Buccaneers took an 11-point lead when  Adamson connected on a three pointer. She was 3/4 from beyond the arc on the afternoon and finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and seventh for her career. Her final game in the Buc Dome was her 98th career start and her 78th consecutive start dating back to January of 2023.

Tied at 46 with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, Shimei Muhammad connected on a three pointer to give the Buccaneers the lead and sparked an 11-0 run. Alben was the leading scorer for the Buccaneers with 18 points and eight rebounds. Ellis finished with 11 points on 4/11 shooting.

The Buccaneers win finish the regular season with a 14-15 record overall and a 10-6 conference record. It is their second most wins in school history during conference play and just their second time ever having double-digit conference wins. They will await the results of other Big South games before knowing where they will be seeded in next week's Big South Tournament in Johnson City, TN.
