JOHNSON CITY, TN - The Charleston Southern women's basketball team was eliminated from the Big South Tournament on Thursday, as they lost to the No. 5 Winthrop Eagles on a buzzer-beating three-point field goal by a 48-45 score inside Freedom Hall Civic Center in Johnson City, TN.
Tied at 45 in the final seconds of the game, the Buccaneers forced a travel from the Eagles and called a timeout. Out of the timeout, an offensive foul from the Buccaneers gave the Eagles the ball back. With just over three seconds left, the Eagles found an open shooter in the corner and knocked down a three-point field goal as time expired.Â
In a low-scoring first half, both teams struggled to shoot from the floor, as the Buccaneers shot just 1/14 from beyond the arc. Despite the struggles from the field, the Buccaneers held the Eagles to just 16 points and took a three-point lead into the locker room.Â
Leading by six points in the final quarter, the Buccaneers led by as many as nine points with seven minutes left in the fourth period but were 2/5 from the charity strike in the fourth quarter, which allowed Winthrop to come back into the game. After Charleston Southern took a one-point lead with under a minute left, but the Eagles knocked down a free throw to tie the score at 45.Â
The Buccaneers shot a season-low 1/21 from beyond the arc and 0/7 in the second half. They shot 31% overall from the field and were 8/16 from the free throw line.Â
This season, the Buccaneers finished with a 14-15 record in the regular season and 10-6 in Big South play. Charleston Southern finished conference play with a .625 winning percentage, which is the best mark in school history. Their 10 wins in conference play were the second most in school history and the second time ever that they had double-digit wins in the Big South.Â
This season also included two wins over a group of five teams, which is their first time in 2016, and their win over Charlotte on the road was their first non-conference road win since 2017.
