ASHEVILLE, N.C. - After being down for most of the first half, the Charleston Southern women's basketball team outscored the UNC Asheville Bulldogs by 14 points in the second half and took home the 60-51 road win on Saturday afternoon.
For the fourth-straight game,
Catherine Alben scored over 20 points, finishing the game with 23 points on 8/14 shooting, while
Madison Adamson had a double-digit rebounding performance for the sixth time this season, pulling down a team-leading 12 boards.
The Buccaneers (12-14, 8-5 in conference) struggled out of the gate, as the Bulldogs (2-23, 0-12 in the Big South) jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead. It was a
Caelan Ellis three-point field goal with 7:00 left in the opening quarter that broke the scoreless drought for the Buccaneers. Asheville led by as many as 11 points in the first half, as they led 25-14 early in the second quarter and took a 33-28 lead into the locker room.
Charleston Southern came out strong in the second half, quickly gaining their first lead of the game with 7:50 left in the third quarter. After Asheville regained the lead midway through the third period, the Buccaneers went up 40-38 with 2:22 left thanks to another three-point basket from Ellis.
Going into the fourth quarter, the Buccaneers and Bulldogs were dead locked at 43, but Charleston Southern was able to go on a run and take a 10-point lead with 4:15 to go thanks to a jumper by Adamson. Charleston Southern finished the day 21/56 from the field and 12/15 from the charity strike. They were +12 in the rebounding department, finishing with 43 boards compared to 31 from Asheville.
Charleston Southern will have a rematch with the High Point Panthers on Wednesday night inside the Buc Dome. Tip off is at 6:00 PM, as the Buccaneers look to pull off the upset against the top team in the conference.
