Asheville Takes Series Finale on Sunday Over Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON – UNC Asheville took the Sunday getaway game from Charleston Southern by a final score of 5-3. The Buccaneers were able to put a few runners on in the top of the ninth but were unable to score them. The Bucs still take the series win over the Bulldogs as they prevailed in the Friday and Saturday games.

"I am very appreciative of our players' efforts this weekend," said Head Coach Marc MacMillan following the game. "On the road from Charleston since 6:30 on Firday morning, our mentality for today was not as sharp as the past two days; however, I do believe they gave us their all. Both Scott and I knew the significance of this game, and Asheville pitched it a little bit better and took advantage of the opportunities offensively. I tip my cap to their starting pitcher as he was able to prevent our offense from putting more runs across the plate. I recognize Ram's efforts, like Truitt yesterday, as he kept us in the game. The execution of the last play of the game was flawless by Asheville. Regardless of whether our base runner would have been safe, it was not worth the risk and a poor decision by me to send the runner."

In the first, Charleston Southern left a pair of runners on base unable to bring anyone home in the opening frame. In the bottom half of the inning, the Bulldogs struck first scoring on an RBI single to left field.

In the third, the Buccaneers were able to get on the board scoring twice and taking the lead at 2-1. Peter Werth drew a walk to load the bases with there already being two outs. Christian Bauman then sent a double down the left field line that scored Dakota Miller and Chandler Tuupo who were on second and third.

The lead did not last for long as the Bulldogs put together three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead back. They scored one off a single while they got the other two off a pair of walks. In the fourth, they tacked on another off a sacrifice fly.

Charleston Southern got a run back in the 8th with Alex Urlaub sending a single up the middle to score Werth and cut their deficit to two runs with them trailing at 5-3 now. In the bottom half of the inning, the Bulldogs loaded up the bases, but were unable to score any of them as they headed to the 9th.

The Buccaneers were able to get runners on and seemed to have things going their way like yesterday when they put up a five-spot to regain the lead. Cade Conway got hit by the first pitch of the inning to get on base, but BJ Banyon came in as a pinch hitter and grounded into a double play. Tuupo then was able to get on base after a single, and Miller sent a double to left center off the wall. During the play, Tuupo tried to advance home, but was thrown out on the play to end the game.

Charleston Southern finished with 10 hits in the game with Miller, Werth and Urlaub each finishing with two. Tuupo, Bauman, John Emendorfer and Sam Low had one apiece. Bauman had two of the team's RBIs while Urlaub had the other.

The Bucs used four pitchers in the game today. Sam Massey got the start and gave up four earned runs in his 2.1 innings of work. Nick Timpanelli was next out and allowed a pair of free bases to the Bulldogs. Anthony Ramirez was the next called upon throwing 4.0 innings allowing one earned run off four hits. Dylan Matsuoka threw the final 1.2 innings and gave up just one hit and one walk to go along with no runs.

Charleston Southern now sits at 12-12 on the season and holds a 4-2 record in Big South play through the first two weekends. If the rest of the scores are the league hold, the Bucs will be in a three-way tie with USC Upstate and Winthrop at 4-2. Presbyterian will also be in the mix at 2-1.

The Buccaneers will return to Charleston later today and will be getting ready for their third game of the season against The Citadel which will be contested on Tuesday. The Bulldogs took the most recent matchup between the two squads off a walk-off, scoring in the 9th to get the win.
