JACKSONVILLE – Charleston Southern picked up their first loss of 2024 on Monday as they traveled to the University of North Florida. The Bucs fall to 4-1 on the year with this being the team's first road match as well.
The Ospreys were able narrowly take the doubles point. The Bucs won quickly at court #3 as the duo of
Amila Jusufbegovic and
Noa Boyd won 6-2 at it. However, the hosts were able to respond and take the remaining two matches. The decision on court #2 needed a tiebreaker with UNF getting it 7-6 (3).
Charleston Southern then fell behind 2-0 as
Anastasia Astakhova was forced to retire in the second set on court #5. She had won the first set 6-2 and was up 2-1 when it was called.
The Buccaneers were able to respond to it with
Marina Skegro and
Jessica Braun taking the victories in their matches to level the match score at two apiece. Skegro won on court #4 in straight sets at 6-3, 6-3 with Braun's in the topflight finishing shortly after at 6-4, 6-2.
North Florida got their point at #6, while Charleston Southern got theirs from Jusufbegovic at #2, each coming by straight set decisions. Jusufbegovic finished hers with a score of 7-6 (3), 6-3.
The overall match winner came down to the result on court #3 which was the only one to go to a third set. Boyd got the win in the first set, but UNCF's Kendall Nash pulled out the victory for the Ospreys with the 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory.
Charleston Southern returns to action this weekend as they will take on another tough pair of opponents in Charlotte and the University of South Carolina. They will both be played on Sunday, February 25 with the contest against the 49ers to be at 10:00 a.m. and Gamecocks at 6:00 p.m.
