CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Buccaneers improved to 4-0 on the season with a 6-1 victory over Coastal Carolina on Tuesday afternoon. The victory continues to cement this as the program's best start to a year since the 2015-16 where they started off 7-0.
"This has been a special start because it is my last season playing with the team and we are seeing all our heard work at play," said senior
Khyanna Singh. "It is great to see it all paying off as we start of the season and are now 4-0."
The Buccaneers were able to overcome a huge deficit in doubles and get the early point for the lead. The Chanticleers got the win in the topflight of doubles, but the Bucs were able to overcome a 5-0 deficit on the #2 court with Singh and
Anastasia Astakhova prevailing 7-5. Charleston Southern clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (4) victory on court #3 by
Noa Boyd and
Amila Jusufbegovic.
Charleston Southern got rolling in singles immediately, taking the first sets in four of the matches.
Jessica Braun played on the #2 court today and won 6-0, 6-2. The visitors got their lone point of the day from the #6 position which finished shortly after.
The Buccaneers got straight set victories on courts 5, 3 and 1 after to seal the win. Singh won 6-3, 6-4 on court #5 and Boyd provided the match clincher with her victory at #3 by a 7-5, 6-3 final. Jusufbegovic got the team's fifth point in her season debut in the topflight claiming it by a 6-3, 7-5 scoreline.
The day ended with Astakhova's match in position #4. She dropped the first set in a tiebreaker but was able to bounce back to win the second 7-5 and then the third set, 10-point tiebreaker, 10-8.
Charleston Southern have their four matches away from home with them traveling to North Florida this weekend for a pair of them. They will take on Florida International on the UNF campus on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and follow that with a Sunday 11:00 a.m. matchup with the hosts, North Florida. The following Sunday, February 25 they will take on Charlotte and South Carolina on the campus of USC.
