Bucs Fall to Chanticleers in Home Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern women's basketball team battled the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Sunday, dropping their home opener by a 97-53 final.

Tyonna Bailey led the way for the Buccaneers (0-3) with 13 points. Catherine Alben was right behind her with 10 points and was tied for the team lead in rebounds with six. The Chanticleers (2-0) outscored the Buccaneers by double digits in each of the first three quarters. 

Charleston Southern was off to a good start, as neither team could find the basket in the first few minutes of the basketball game. Alben knocked down a three pointer with 6:52 to go in the first quarter to put the Buccaneers up 7-2. From there, it was all Chanticleers. After the Bucs went ahead 12-11 with 4:40 left in the first quarter, the Chanticleers went on a 10-0 run over a three-minute span. Then, Alaina Nettles stopped the run with a pair of free throws, but Coastal Carolina scored five-straight points to close out the quarter.

After the Bucs scored on the first two possesions of the second quarter, the Chanticleers went on a 16-0 run over a six-minute span, where they knocked down four three's. 

Coastal Carolina continued their success out of halftime, as they began the second half on an 11-0 run and held Charleston Southern to just nine points in third quarter.  They began the fourth quarter on a 13-2 run capped off by a three pointer with 7:19 to go. The Chanticleers led by as many as 47 points in this one, as a layup with 1:38 left made it 97-50.

Charleston Southern turned it over 28 times compared to just 15 for Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers shot 31 three pointers, making 13 of them. The Buccaneers were 5/25 from beyond te arc and shot 6/13 from the free throw line.

The Buccaneers have a quick turnaround, as they travel to Baton Rouge to take on a top-10 team in LSU on Tuesday. The game begins at 11 AM central time and will be streamed on SEC Network+.
