Charleston, S.C.- The Buccaneers Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams will compete at the Big South Championships on the campus of Charleston Southern this upcoming Friday morning. The women's 5k is set for the gun to go off at 9:00 a.m. with the men's 8K to follow at 9:45 a.m.
Last time out the Charleston Southern women ran at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, Texas with the whole lineup setting new personal bests. The Bucs were led by Sarah McCartney who finished in 32nd overall with a time of 20:08.7, slashing nearly 40 seconds off her personal best.
Keerstin Augustin was the next to cross the line for CSU and took 50th overall as she went under 21 minutes for the first time in her career, slashing over 45 seconds off her previous personal best. Elizabeth Shaylor and Katrina Husby were the third and fourth finishers for the team and shattered their previous career bests in the 6K by over a full minute as they ran 21:18.1 and 21:28.5. Sarah Jacobs was the fifth finisher for the team with her time of 21:50.5, nearly a full minute PR.
The men also competed at the same meet and had the same amount of success as the women with nearly the whole lineup setting personal bests at it.
Sam Waldin led the group with his career best time of 23:41.0 which earned him Big South Runner of the Week.
Behind him was Zach Wedding who had a time of 23:48.7, breaking 24 for the first time as well.
Zach Mickler and
Jeff Wedding were the next to close the line at 24:04.4 and 24:15.3.
Martin Iriondo rounded out the team's top five with his time of 24:31.2.
The Buccaneer women will be vying for their first-ever Big South Championship at the race. For each of the past two seasons, this group has claimed runner-up honors at the meet with both finishes marking their best in program history. The men on the other hand will be looking to claim their fifth consecutive title and continue their recent stretch of dominance among their conference opponents.
The Big South Championship will be held on the morning of Friday, November 1 at Charleston Southern.
