CHARLOTTE – The Buccaneers cross country program claimed another weekly award from the Big South in their final regular season meet this week.
Sam Waldin earned Big South Runner of the Week for his performance at the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M.
Waldin led the team to the finish line as he turned in a massive career-best time of 23:41.0, running sub-24 in the 8K for the first time of his career. He finished 44
th overall in a field of nearly 400 runners. His performance helped the team take 13
th overall and they were able to knock off teams from Power 5 and Group of 5 conferences including North Texas, Sam Houston, Rice, Houston, Texas State, Louisiana, Baylor, Arizona State, UTEP and UTSA.
This award marks the fifth that the Buccaneers have claimed this season. Earlier in the fall, following the season opener,
Caleb Kenyon Runner of the Week while
Lin Scott was selected as the Freshman of the Week. After their race at East Carolina,
Zack Wedding and
Martin Iriondo swept the awards with Wedding taking the Runner of the Week and Iriondo winning Freshman of the Week.
They are going to be back in action next Friday for the 2024 Big South Championship. The race will be held by Charleston Southern with them competing at the CSU Cross Country Course with the men vying for their fifth consecutive title.
