Buccaneers Prevail over Terriers on Windy Sunday Afternoon

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern overcame an early deficit against Wofford on an incredibly windy Sunday afternoon to defeat the Terriers by a 5-2 final score. The victory moves the team to 2-0 on the season after opening the year win a year yesterday over East Carolina.

"This team fights really well," said junior captain Amila Jusufbegovic after the match. "Today's conditions with the wind made it tough, but we all stayed in our matches with many going to a third set. I am proud of everyone on the team for fighting until the end today to get the decision."

The Terriers won the doubles point to start the match, getting the decisions on courts 1 and 3. The clinch came from the topflight and finished seconds ahead of CSU's Noa Boyd and Jusufbegovic winning 7-5 in flight 2.

In singles play, the Bucs got out to a slow start, dropping the first set on four of the courts. However, on the courts they got the first set in, they each pulled off straight set triumphs. Anastasia Astakhova won at #4 with a 6-1, 6-3 score and was followed later by Brenda Yoris' 6-2, 7-6 (2) at #6.

The momentum in the matches began to shift drastically around the time CSU clinched their first team point of the day. All the CSU players who dropped their opening set responded by winning in the second to force a winner-take-all third.

Boyd was the first to complete her come-from-behind victory, taking court #3 at 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 and put the Bucs a point away from the match victory. Jusufbegovic provided the match point at #2 with scores of 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Jessica Braun rallied late in hers but fell in the topflight while Marina Skegro was the last to finish and needed a tiebreaker in the third set to decide a winner. Skegro came away with the win at 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (6).

The Buccaneers have their next match on Thursday against S.C. State with the team welcoming the Bulldogs for a 1:00 p.m. first serve.
