COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Buccaneer women improved on a pair of their school records fall on Saturday at the Gamecock Opener.
Chloe Greene knocked down her school record in the 600m while
Sarah McCartney improved her school record in the 3K that evening.
In one of the closing events of the day, the reputation of Charleston Southern women's distance continued to rise as McCartney improved her own school record in the 3K. She crossed the line in 9:42.20, two seconds faster than her previous personal best in the distance. Greene also rebroke her school record for the 600m with a time of 1:36.99, moving into 9
th in league history for the distance.
Destiny Wallace also had a big day on the track, advancing to the finals of the 60m and taking third overall in the field. She recorded her best time of the day in the semifinals with a 7.56.
Austyn Koppe led the CSU runners through the prelims of the 60m hurdles as she set a personal best and moved up the school record in the event. She recorded a time of 8.64 in the finals to take 4
th overall.
Chloe Greene only competed in the prelims for the event and took the 8
th place seed time with a career best of 8.86 in it. This placed her 6
th overall in school history.
Jewel Ash had a great run in the 300m as she notched a 40.05 for 4
th-fastest in school history. The time also places her as the 6
th-best in the event in conference history.
Looking into the distance events,
Anne Akagi finished in second place in the women's 800 with a time of 2:16.55 and then 8
th in the one mile.
Emma James also competed in the mile and notched a 5:12.02 to place herself 9
th in program history for the event.
For the women's 3K there were five Charleston Southern runners who competed in it with McCartney leading the way.
Elizabeth Shaylor was the next finisher for the Bucs as she closed with a time of 10:23.82 to for the 8
th best in program history.
Charleston Southern saw great performances from their two returners in the throwing events.
Layla Senter and
Zemaya Carson went 1-2 in the shot put as Senter recorded an indoor personal best mark of 14.42m (47' 3.75") which moved her up from 5
th to 2
nd in the school record book. Carson had a 14.15m (46' 5.25") in the shot put and then a personal best in the weight throw for 4
th overall in the field with a mark of 17.55m (57' 7"). This bumped her up from 4
th to 3
rd in the program's top ten list.
The day ended with the women's 4x400 meter relay. The Buccaneers' A-team took 5
th overall with a time of 3:47.66 with the team including
Amaya Johnson,
Dylann Core,
Grenisha Thomas and Ash. This ranks as the 4
th fastest in CSU history.
The Buccaneers have their next meet in two weeks. They will travel to Clemson, South Carolina to take part in the Bob Pollock Invitational from January 26-27.
