Bucs Fall in Five-Set Affair

Spartanburg, S.C. - The Charleston Southern women's volleyball team fell to 0-2 in conference play on Friday night, as they lost a five-set affair against the USC Upstate Spartans.

Indigo Young had a career-high 20 kills, while Brenna Rowland had 10 kills and nine blocks, and Illaria Durante led the Bucs in assists with 44.

In the first set, both teams traded a pair of runs throughout. Tied at 20, the Spartans (9-5, 2-0 in conference) used a 5-0 run to close out a set-one victory and take a 1-0 lead.

The Bucs (6-10, 0-2 in conference) needed overtime in the second set, but they were able to tie things at one with a 26-24 win. They jumped out to a 3-1 lead with a pair of kills from Young. The Spartan lead got to as high as five, as they took a 17-12 lead before a trio of attack errors and a kill by Emmy Rollins brought it to within two. Down by three, the Bucs closed out the set with a 7-2 run.

Upstate was able to take control in the third set, as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Their lead stayed under five for most of the set until they closed the set on a 4-0 run to take set three 25-17.

After falling behind 2-5 in the fourth set, it was all Bucs from there. With an 11-10 lead, they used a 4-0 run with kills from Skylar Yates, Emily Struckmeyer and Rollins to take a 15-10 lead. After that, they had control, forcing a fifth set with a 25-19 win.

It looked like Charleston Southern was going to get their first conference win, as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Upstate responded, but the Bucs got the lead back to four with a kill from Yates to make it 9-5. That is when the Spartans used a 5-0 run to take the lead 10-9. Down 14-12, the Bucs got a kill from Young; however, the Bucs still fell short, as the Spartans got a kill to take the set 15-13.
