ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Charleston Southern volleyball traveled to South Carolina State on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping the Bulldogs as Head Coach Carry Brown recorded her 100
th career victory. With the win, the Buccaneers now stand at 3-1 on the season and winners of their past three. Today's win marks the first time since 2019 the program has claimed three consecutive nonconference triumphs.
Charleston Southern went back and forth early in the first set with the hosts before starting to settle in and claim a decisive lead to seal the opening frame at 25-14. They had their lowest hitting percentage of the night in the first set at .296 before raising it to .333 and .435 in the ensuing ones. At the end of the match, they had a .351 hitting percentage.
The Buccaneers claimed the second by a 25-12 score with many players making their first career appearances with Charleston Southern and having impressive showings. In the third, the Bucs went up big quickly, taking an 8-0 advantage with
Ilaria Durante on the serving end of the first points. CSU got the game at 25-8, only recording one attack error during the entire set.
Giada Pais-Marden led all players in kills accumulating nine in the contest.
Emmy Rollins,
Jyriah Morgan and
Emily Struckmeyer each picked up four with
Faith Burch and
Brenna Rowland adding three apiece.
Ilaria Durante had 21 assists in the outing with
Kahea Carvalho dishing five in two sets played in.
Angelika Rusin notched a trio of service aces and
Brenna Rowland added two late in the final set.
On the defensive end, the Bucs held the Bulldogs to a -.120 hitting percentage and just 14 kills. A dozen Buccaneers recorded a dig with Rusin leading the group at 11. Durate, Pais-Marden, Rollins and
Julia Fledderjohn each had four to contribute to the CSU's 38 on the night. The pair of freshmen back row players in
Presley Morris and
Mallory Neale had three apiece. As a squad, the Bucs had nine total blocks with Rowland and Pais-Marden having four each and
Savannah Freeman adding three.
Charleston Southern will be back in action on September 1 as they will be hosting the CSU Tournament on Friday and Saturday. They kick off the weekend with a noon matchup against Chattanooga and follow it with a 7:00 p.m. first serve against North Carolina A&T with the nightcap being designated as the team's "Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night" for the year.
