CHARLESTON, S.C. – After an explosive offensive display in a win over Brewton-Parker, Charleston Southern hits the road for the first time this season with a Sunday afternoon game at Mercer. Kickoff at Betts Stadium in Macon, Ga., is at 1 p.m.
The Bucs wasted little time starting the onslaught against the Barons, scoring just 1:11 into the game en route to a 9-0 victory.
Dakota Fiedler recorded the first CSU hat trick in 10 years, and
Bri Robinson set a school record with four assists.
Jenea Knight, last year's leading scorer, found the back of the net twice while
Erin Rush,
Sam Carlson,
Daniela Contreras and
Madisen Mitchum each contributed one goal. Rush also had a pair of assists for a four-point day.
Sara Curtis was tested only twice and made saves on both Brewton-Parker shot attempts.
The nine goals are the fourth-highest total in school history, and nine assists tied for second. It was also the first opening-day shutout since a 1-0 victory at Wofford in 2018.
The opposition gets tougher on Sunday as Mercer is coming off a 7-6-5 season and reached the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament. The Bears allowed only 17 goals a year ago and one in their first game this season in a draw at Campbell.
Lana Whitfield scored the Mercer goal in the final minute of the first half to create the tie with assists going to Kylie Buchanan and Kendall Cook. Lindsay Bell made six saves to preserve the tie.
Whitfield tied for third on the team last season with three goals. Aliah Kitchens is the top returning scorer with four goals and 10 points in 2021.
