CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern used a strong opening half to pave the way to its second victory of the year Saturday, topping Robert Morris 34-21 in front of the home fans at Buccaneer Field. Prior to kick, the Buccaneers celebrated its 2022-23 football class.
MOORE CALLS FOR MORE
Charleston Southern running back
JD Moore opened the scoring for the Buccaneers early on, finding pay dirt from three yards out on just the second play of the drive. Moore's score would not only be the first score but also gave CSU a lead they would not surrender the rest of the way.Â
Â
Moore then found the endzone again in the third quarter after Robert Morris cut the game to just one score to put things out of reach and spark some second-half noise. Moore took the rock in from 29 yards out to cap a three-play drive spanning just 1:11 of gametime.
SPECIAL, SPECIAL TEAMS
The Buccaneers continue to call on its special teams unit to be a spark in the gameplan, as placekicker
Sam Babbush was 2-2 on the day, as a 42-yarder in the first quarter split the uprights to give the Bucs a two-score lead was followed by one from 26 yards out in the second to stay perfect on the day. Punter
David Gelb continues to shine as well, recording two kicks that traveled over 50 yards including a long of 58 yards.
CONTINUING TO BE BEYOND THEIR YEARS
Charleston Southern wideout duoÂ
Seth Anderson andÂ
Vinson Davis continue to shine in their freshman campaigns after both being most recently named to the Jerry Rice Award Watch List, which is the top FCS freshman in the country. Anderson accounted for 97 yards on five catches and a score while Davis hauled in five catches for 44 yards.Â
NUMBERS, NUMBERS AND MORE NUMBERS
JD Moore,Â
TJ Ruff and
Roderick Hawkins made up CSU backfield in the rare three-back rotation, with Moore making the most noise. Moore finished the night with 88 yards and two scores on 16 carries while Hawkins added 71 yards on 10 carries and Ruff 50 yards on 13 totes.Â
Deymon Fleming Jr. was called on to be the signal caller for CSU down the stretch, and the redshirt sophomore made the most of it. Fleming Jr. finished 16-31 through the air for 242 yards and two scores.
On the defensive side of the ball, Charleston Southern was led byÂ
Garrett Sayegh as the linebacker finished with nine total tackles, seven of which being solo stops.Â
