VolleyBucs Complete Weekend Sweep with 3-1 Win over Spartans

The Charleston Southern Buccaneers completed a weekend sweep on Saturday with a 3-1 match win over the USC Upstate Spartans. 

Peyton Thompson led all scorers with 22 kills and Emilee Karelse had 45 assists, while Julia Fledderjohn had 30 digs in the win. 

Set One
After jumping out to a 10-6 lead with an attack error by the Spartans, the Bucs (14-14, 7-7) found themselves in a back-and-forth battle with USC Upstate. The Spartans went on a 6-2 run to tie the set at 11. 

Later in the set, after a service error gave the Bucs a 17-16 lead, the Spartans took their first lead of the afternoon with back-to-back kills. Then, with the set point on the line, the Bucs scored three straight points to tie the set at 25 with a kill by both Jyriah Morgan and Thompson. After Upstate tied it at 27, the Bucs got back-to-back kills from Thompson to take the set 29-27. 

Set Two
USC Upstate came out firing in set two, taking a 9-3 lead with five kills and a service ace. Madison McNally had back-to-back kills to cut the deficit to two. 

Then, down 16-12, the Bucs scored four straight points. Thompson had two kills, McNally had one and the Spartans had an attack error.

After a bad set and an attack error, the Bucs took a 20-18 lead, but the Spartans finished the set on a 7-4 run to take the set 26-24. 

Set Three
After falling behind 4-0 to start the set, the Bucs were able to find themselves again as they went on a 6-1 run to take the lead. McNally had back-to-back kills to end the run.

It was a back and forth battle until the very end, when tied at 22, the Bucs finished the set on a 5-2 run. It took a little extra time, but the Bucs finished off the Spartans 26-24. 

Set Four
The final set was all Bucs from the beginning, as they fumped out to a 12-5 lead with a service by McNally, two attack errors by the Spartans and Indigo Young capped off the run with a kill. 

After the Spartans went on a little run of their own to cut the Bucs lead to 14-8, the Bucs finished the set on an 11-3 run to take the set and the match with a 25-11 win. Thompson had 6 kills in the set. 

The Bucs are back in action next Thursday, November 10 as they host Presbyterian at the Buc Dome. The match will start at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
