The Charleston Southern volleyball team held of a late rally from the UNC Asheville Bulldogs to win in five sets. After taking the first two sets 25-19 and 25-17, the Bulldogs (3-13, 0-6) came back two wins in a row 25-17 and 25-13 before the Bucs (10-10, 3-3) took the fifth set 15-13.
Set One
After falling behind early, the Bucs were able to on a few runs; including a 6-2 run that included a kill by
Jyriah Morgan,
Giada Pais-Marden and
Emily Struckmeyer to make it 20-16. Pais-Marden had four kills in the first set for CSU and 10 overall on the day.
Set Two
What started as a back-and-forth battle became a dominant set win by the Buccaneers. Midway through, the Bucs went on a 4-0 run that included a kill by
Indigo Young and two kills from
Peyton Thompson. CSU scored the final three points of the set as well with two kills by Sylar Yates and Thompson.
Sets Three and Four
UNC Asheville clawed their way back with consecutive dominate victories in sets three and four. In set three, the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and expanded to 12-7. The Bucs tried to claw their way back into it, as consecutive kills from Thompson cut the deficit to two. Despite the comeback effort, UNC Asheville was able to score the final four points thanks to two attack errors and a ball handling error by the Bucs. Set four was the same story, as the Bulldogs cruised their way to victory. Tied at five, UNC Asheville went on a 6-0 run that ended with back-to-back kills. As CSU was trying to get back into it, the Bulldogs finished the set on a 9-2 run, taking this match to a fifth and final set.
Set Five
In a nail-biting final set, the Bucs found themselves behind early 5-1. They cut the deficit to one after two bad sets from the Bulldogs and took their first lead in two sets after Struckmeyer had a kill to make it 9-8. The match would continue to go back-and-forth, as both teams traded points until the end. Tied at 13, the Bucs got a kill from Pais-Marden to take the lead. Then, with the match on the line, Julia Fldderjohn earned a crucial service ace, giving the Buccaneers the conference win.
Indigo Young led all scorers with a .647 hit percentage. She continues to lead the Big South in that category. The Bucs had 59 kills overall, led by Thompson with 16 and Young wth 11.
Angelika Rusin led the team in digs with 19, adding to her lead in the conference.
The Bucs hit the road next week for back-to-back games away from Buccaneer Fieldhouse. They will take on the Winthrop Eagles on Friday, October 14 at 6 p.m. in Rock Hill, SC. Then, they will travel to Clinton, SC to take on Presbyterian College. That match starts at 2 p.m. next Saturday.
