McClendon Shines, CSU Falls to Kennesaw State on the Road

KENNESAW, Ga. – Charleston Southern's hit the road for its final non-conference matchup of the season Saturday afternoon, falling to former Big South member Kennesaw State, 30-20, in The Peach State.

TO THE CRIB, AGAIN
Charleston Southern defensive back Jeremiah McClendon continues to show up in big moments, this time taking matters into his own hands with a pick-6 right before the half to account for the first points for the Buccaneers in the contest. McClendon picked the pass off and took it 25 yards to the house to make it a one-score game with just over a minute before the midway break.

STAYIN' ON THE GROUND
The Buccaneers continue to call on its running game to be the catalyst of the offense, as JD Moore and TJ Ruff again shoulder the load for CSU. It was Moore that collected the most carries with 14, gaining 45 yards and a score. Ruff was a force as well in the backfield, using just six carries to gain 36 yards while also finding pay dirt to account for the other Charleston Southern score.

BEYOND THEIR YEARS
Charleston Southern wideout duo Seth Anderson and Vinson Davis continue to shine in their freshman campaigns after both being most recently named to the Jerry Rice Award Watch List, which is the top FCS freshman in the country. Anderson accounted for 82 yards, including a 21-yard catch, while Davis impressed with 13 catches to equal 54 yards.

QUICK HITTERS
Of the two offensive scoring drives for Charleston Southern, neither one took more than three minutes off the clock as CSU continues to move the ball quickly in scoring drives. After McClendon's defensive score, Ruff's tote from 22 yards out capped off a drive that lasted just 2:57 near the end of the third stanza. The final scoring drive was the most impressive, though, as Moore found pay dirt from five yards out to complete an eight play, 75-yard drive spanning just 1:57.

NUMBERS, NUMBERS AND MORE NUMBER
JD Moore and TJ Ruff made up CSU backfield yet again tonight, with Moore being the featured back. Moore finished the night with 45 yards and a score on 14 carries while Ruff added 36 yards and a score. Deymon Fleming Jr. was called on to be the signal caller for CSU down the stretch, and the redshirt sophomore made the most of it. Fleming Jr. finished 13-15 through the air for 108 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Charleston Southern was led by Garrett Sayegh as the linebacker finished with 17 total tackles, 11 of which being solo stops. Jerome Rice III shined as well in the linebacker position, amassing 13 stops, including two TFLs and a sack. McClendon forced the only turnover for the Charleston Southern defense, turning it into a quick six from 25 yards out.

UP NEXT
The Buccaneers play hosts for the final time in the 2022-23 campaign Saturday, November 5, as Big South foe Robert Morris makes the trip to Charleston for just the second time in the series. The two sides have split the previous two meetings, with the home side laying claim to each of those affairs. The action is set for a 12:00 p.m. kick at Buccaneer Field.
