Bucs Defeat Highlanders; Sweep Season Series

The Charleston Southern Buccaneers were able to get the win on Saturday, as they cruised to a 3-1 victory over the Radford Highlanders. This was CSU's (12-14, 5-7) second victory over the Highlanders this season.

Giada Pais-Marden and Peyton Thompson both had 12 kills for the Bucs and Emilee Karelse had 24 assists, while Angelika Rusin had 18 digs on the afternoon.

Set One
Radford jumped out to a 3-0 lead to begin the set, but Charleston Southern took over from there, as they went on a 9-3 run to take a 15-9 lead. Thompson had three kills during that run. Then, after a Radford kill, the Bucs went on another 4-0 run to take a 20-11 lead. Despite a little run by the Highlanders at the end, the Bucs got another kill from Thompson to take the set 25-16.

Set 2
Charleston Southern continued their momentum to start the second set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Then, the lead became 8-2 after a kill by Pais-Marden and Emily Struckmeyer. Behind 19-10, the Highlanders went on a little run of their own, as they cut the deficit to six, but an attack error gave the Bucs a wn in the second set 25-19.

Set Three
Even though they lost the second set, Radford had momentum and carried it into the third set, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. Mid-way through, the Bucs went on a 5-1 run, cutting the lead to just three at the end of the set, but the Highlanders got a kill to take set three 25-21.

Set Four
The final set of the match was a back-and-forth affair from the beginning, but the Bucs were able to take a five-point lead with an attack error by the Highlanders. Then, Radford was able to go on a 6-1 run and take their first lead of the set with a 16-15 lead. Down 22-20, the Bucs were able to finish the match on a 5-1 run capped off the 25-23 victory with blocks from Struckmeyer and Thomson.

Charleston Southern is back in action next Friday, November 5, as they take on UNC Asheville for the second time this season. The Bucs will be back at home in two weeks when they host Presbyterian and Winthrop to wrap up the season.
