CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern begins the homestretch of the season on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. game against Campbell at the CSU Soccer Field.
The match is a critical one for both teams in the race for berths in the Big South Tournament. The Bucs have 10 points (3-1-1) and are tied for third with Radford and Gardner-Webb. The Camels have 11 points (3-0-2) and are in second, one point behind USC Upstate.
The top four teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the tournament, which will be held in Matthews, N.C., on November 3 and 6.
CSU picked up a point in its last game with a 2-2 draw against High Point. The Bucs built a 2-0 lead in the first half behind goals by
Fiama Hidalgo and
Jenea Knight before the Panthers rallied to gain the tie.Â
The goal was Knight's sixth of the season, ranking her in a tie for third in the Big South. The sophomore is also tied for third in points (16) and shots (32) and tied for second in shots on goal (17). Knight is tied with
Erin Rush and
Bri Robinson for the team lead in assists with four.
Sara Curtis has five shutouts and owns a 1.67 goals against average and .706 save percentage.
The Camels are undefeated in their last nine games (7-0-2), including a 4-0 win over Presbyterian in their last outing. Jessica Donald has a team-high five goals, followed by Jackie Richards, Elyssa Nowowieski and Kaleigh Backlund with four each. Richards is also tied for the Big South lead with six assists.
Campbell holds a 15-2-1 lead in the series and has won six in a row. The Camels took a 2-1 victory last season in Buies Creek, N.C., with
Lauren McDonald scoring the CSU goal and
Erin Rush getting an assist.
