Women’s track & field shows out day two of Big South Championships

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Charleston Southern women's track & field saw plenty of PR's on day two of the 2021 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships Tuesday with Jewel Ash setting the school record in the 400m Hurdles and Amy Yarborough taking the shot put title.

Charleston Southern sits third in the team standings heading into the final day with 13 events to be decided.

Sprints/Distance/Hurdles
Grace Schvaneveldt turned-in the second-fastest time on the day in the 1500m as she qualified for Wednesday's final with a time of 4:40.18, a new PR and the school's third-fastest time. Schvaneveldt jumped High Point's Julia Hellman on the final stretch on her way to a second-place finish in her heat and second-best time overall.

The Buccaneer trio of Chaneal Harris, Caroline Edmondson and Jewel Ash each qualified for the 100m Hurdles Wednesday each placing among the top-5 of Tuesday's prelim race. Harris had a season-best time of 14.06 seconds, good for second among all qualifiers.

Dylann Core, Caitlyn Ettienne and Eden Senior all placed among the top-10 of Tuesday's prelim with Core taking second and Ettienne fifth to qualify for Wednesday's finals. Core's time of 55:86 sets a new PR for the junior (7th all-time at CSU) while Ettienne ran a time of 57.60 for a fifth-place finish.

Both Amanda Obijiaku and Destiny Wallace qualified for the 100m finals Wednesday as Obijiaku placed second with a time of 11.72 seconds and Wallace placed sixth crossing the finish line in 12.19 seconds. Wallace's 12.19 performance was a new PR supplanting her old mark of 12.28 at the Aggie Invitational.

Sommer McKenzie placed among the top-8 of the 800m Tuesday posting a time of 2:18.16, a time good for the No. 9 spot on the Charleston Southern record list. McKenzie beat a previous mark set at the Yellow Jacket Invitational.

Jewel Ash set a new school record in the prelim round of the 400m hurdles Tuesday crossing the line at 59.50 seconds and posting the best time of the day. Ash broke Dotrine Jacobs' 59.52 mark set at the 2014 Florida Relays as the lone athlete below a minute on the clock. Caroline Edmondson placed fourth Tuesday with a time of 62.37 qualifying for Wednesday's final.

Obijiaku followed her 100m performance with the best 200m time of the day and setting a PR of 23.79, the third-quickest time in program history. She and Dylann Core (24.71, new PR) qualified for Wednesday's finals while Destiny Wallace posted a PR of 25.00 and placing among the field's top-10.

The trio of Bethany Thornhill, Sommer McKenzie and Anne Akagi closed the night for the women's team in the 3K steeplechase with Thornhill and McKenzie both posting PR's. Thornhill's mark of 11:06.29 stands as the fourth-best in program history while McKenzie's mark of 11:22.86 stands sixth in school history.

Throws/Jumps
Amy Yarborough won the shot put title to being Tuesday's action headlining a trio of Bucs to record PR's in their biggest meet of the season. Yarborough's mark of 14.31 meters won the event and set the schools' third-best mark in the event.

She was joined on the podium by Kaitlyn Migneault who placed third with a mark of 13.87 meters, also good for fourth at CSU. Layla Senter made it three Bucs with PR's as she placed sixth with a mark of 13.36, also a top-10 mark at No. 9 in school history.

Yarborough's title Tuesday is the first for Charleston Southern in the shot put since Jocelyn Davis at the 2008 Big South Championships.

Yarborough followed-up with a sixth-place finish in the javelin with a mark of 34.98 meters while Sarah Fleming had a mark of 24.97 meters.
