CLINTON, S.C. - Shorthanded and closing the regular season, Charleston Southern refused to blink taking the final three sets for a 3-2 (21-25, 25-27, 25-19, 25-20, 15-12) comeback effort over Presbyterian Friday afternoon in Big South volleyball action.
Led by four Buccaneers (9-5, 9-5 Big South) with double figure kills, the Bucs erased a 2-0 hole with three gut-check wins over the third, fourth and fifth sets earning the series split with Presbyterian (3-13, 3-13 Big South).
Peyton Thompson (16 kills, 12 digs) led a balanced Buccaneer attack that saw a career day from Indigo Young (15 kills, four blocks) and while Rachel Feggeler added a season-best 14 kills and Gabby Naniseni added 11 in the winning effort.
Ashleigh Holweger posted a season-best 43 assists along with 18 digs and breaking the program record with eight service aces. Holweger's eight aces bested her previous career-high of five and set a new Charleston Southern record - a mark previously held by Madison Martin (7 aces at UNC Asheville - Oct. 11, 2016).
Layla Sarvis added four service aces and 18 digs as the Bucs' defense held the Blue Hose to just .156 on the day and only allowed one player to reach double-digit kills.
Friday's win ends the regular season for the Bucs this spring with a 9-5 mark finishing third in the Big South standings, shattering their preseason prediction of seventh. In their spring season the Bucs swept defending champion Winthrop and gave regular season champion High Point their biggest push forcing five sets both matches.
