Bucs’ season ends in first round of Big South Tournament

Box Score RADFORD, Va. – A pair of second-half goals pushed Radford past Charleston Southern Saturday night in the first round of the Big South Tournament, 2-0, at Cupp Stadium.

Jenna Moran made five saves in the loss for the Bucs, who end their season at 6-8-1. Jenea Knight led the Bucs with five shots, while Laren McDonald, Erin Rush, Gracen Beilstein and Bri Robinson all had shots on target for CSU.

CSU had the best opportunity of the first half, but Rush had her shot from inside the 18-yard box saved by Radford goalkeeper Lauren Seedlock late in the half. The Buccaneer backline limited Radford to just two shots on target in the opening half, both of which were saved by Moran.

Radford broke through five minutes into the second half when Reese Degnan tapped in a rebound from close range after Moran made a diving save on an initial shot by Kat Parris. The Highlanders quickly doubled their lead in the 55th minute, as Lily McLane scored from close range after Moran made a diving effort to punch out a cross. McLane's goal came moments after Emma Ryan had a chance blocked from just inside the 18-yard box.

The Bucs had a golden opportunity to cut their deficit in half, but Knight's shot across a sprawling net hit the right post and bounced out. Charleston Southern upped its attacking intensity in the late stages and had four shots in the final 20 minutes, but was unable to find the net as the Highlanders held on to defend home turf in the opening round.

Despite the season ending for Charleston Southern Saturday, the outlook remains bright for the program. CSU's six wins this season mark a four-win improvement from the 2020-21 season, while the Bucs' five conference wins and 15 points in Big South play represent CSU's best season since 2018. The Buccaneers will return 10 starters next year, including nearly all of their offensive production from the 2021 team.
