CSU battles Kennesaw State to the wire in 2-1 setback

KENNESAW, GA. – Zari Hayes gave Charleston Southern an early lead, but Kennesaw State scored the final two goals in a 2-1 victory over the Buccaneers on Friday.

CSU dropped to 2-3 while the Owls improved to 5-2. The Bucs return home to face Alabama State on Sunday at 1 p.m.

How It Happened
•    Hayes moved into a tie for the team lead with her second goal of the season in the 12th minute. Dakota Fiedler was credited with the assist.
•    Jazmin Gonzalez came out of the net and made a stop on a 1v1 opportunity in the 36th minute.
•    It appeared the Bucs would take the lead into halftime before Kameron Downs scored with just 21 seconds left on the clock to even the score.
•    The Owls scored the game-winner in the 58th minute when Carly Pressgrove produced a goal off a corner kick from Kendall Higgs.
•    CSU had a solid opportunity to tie it with under two minutes remaining with a 3-on-3 break, but Kennesaw goalkeeper Tiffany Sornpao was able to break it up.

Inside the Numbers
•    The Owls finished with 25 shots and took 14 corners.
•    Gonzalez made nine saves, and Hayes had both of CSU's shots.

News and Notes
•    Hayes is tied with Kylie Doster for the team lead in goals.
•    Fielder's assist was her first of the season and third of her two-year career.
•    Gonzalez increased her career saves total to 109, one behind Mindy Hyde for a tie for 10th in school history.
