High Point edges CSU in Big South quarterfinal match

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Kyle Levesque scored the lone goal of the game midway through the second half to give High Point a 1-0 win over Charleston Southern and a berth in the Big South semifinals. The Bucs wrap up their season with a record of 7-10-2.

The top-seeded Panthers improved to 10-6-2 and take on Gardner-Webb in the semifinals on Thursday. Jazmin Gonzalez kept CSU in the game with eight saves including one on a penalty kick late in the first half. 

How It Happened
•    Despite allowing nine shots in the first half, the Bucs kept it scoreless entering the break.
•    The Panthers were awarded a PK in the 43rd minute, but Gonzalez thwarted the shot of Juliette Vidal.
•    The Bucs began to put some pressure on the High Point defense in the early stages of the second half.
•    Dakota Fiedler had a shot stopped on a nice save by Talia Klimes in the 58th minute, and Bri Robinson was wide left just 40 seconds later.
•    High Point finally broke through when Levesque put one in the upper left corner off an assist by Carsyn Gold in the 64th minute.
•    CSU had three scoring chances later in the half, including shots on goal by Juliana Barbaccia, Kylie Doster and Kayla Reese, the latter in the 83rd minute.
•    The last chance for the Bucs came on a pair of corner kicks in the final 36 seconds.

Inside the Numbers
•    The Bucs were outshot, 14-5, but both teams had five shots in the second half.
•    Four of CSU's five shots were on goal. High Point had nine attempts on target.
•    Klimes made four saves in the shutout for the Panthers.
•    High Point had seven corner kicks to two for the Bucs.

News and Notes
•    Gonzalez finished her career with 188 saves. She passed Jena Uvalle for sixth in school history with her eight stops on Friday.
•    The PK save was the second of the season for Gonzalez.
•    In addition to Gonzalez, seven other starters went the distance for CSU including Fiedler, Barbaccia, Doster, Reese, Lauren McDonald, Maddie Reilly and Kayla Robinson.
