CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston women's soccer team travels to High Point for a Big South Tournament quarterfinal game on Friday at 7 p.m.
The eighth-seeded Bucs (7-9-2, 3-5-2 Big South) enter the postseason having won four of their last five games. The Panthers are the top seed with an 8-0-2 conference record (9-6-2 overall), with one of those ties coming against the Bucs.
The winners of this weekend's four quarterfinal games head to Matthews, N.C., for the semifinals on November 7. The championship match for a berth in the NCAA Tournament takes place three days later, also in Matthews.
CSU scored 16 goals in defeating UNC Asheville, USC Upstate, South Carolina State and Hampton before losing to Radford in its regular season finale on Saturday. High Point is the first team to go undefeated in Big South play since UNC Asheville in 2004.
The Panthers held a 2-0 lead over the Bucs in the conference opener at High Point on September 21 before CSU staged a dramatic comeback to earn the draw.
Dakota Fiedler scored in the 72nd minute to cut the deficit in half, and
Kayla Reese tied it with just two minutes remaining in regulation.
The goals were career firsts for both Fiedler and Reese.
Jazmin Gonzalez finished with 10 saves, including two stops from close range during the overtime periods.Â
Fiedler leads the Bucs with 13 points on five goals and three assists, and
Zari Hayes has a team-high six goals for 12 points.
Kylie Doster also has five goals, and
Bri Robinson has six assists, the most by a CSU player since 2009.
Gonzalez ranks seventh in school history with 180 career saves and needs five to pass Jena Uvalle for sixth.
Freshmen Sam Gerhart and Emma Schossler lead High Point with four goals, and 11 different Panthers have found the back of the net. Goalkeeper Talia Klimes leads the Big South with six shutouts and has allowed only five goals in conference play.
