CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern looks for its fourth straight win and has an opportunity to clinch a berth in the Big South Tournament when the Buccaneers visit Hampton on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
The Bucs (6-8-2, 2-4-2) can earn a berth in the postseason with a win or tie against the Pirates (1-13-1, 0-7-1 Big South) and a UNC Asheville loss to Winthrop. The Big South Tournament gets underway with quarterfinal games at campus sites on November 1-3.
CSU scored 12 goals in wins over UNC Asheville, USC Upstate and South Carolina State, the most in a three-game span since 2010, and have scored at least three goals six times this season. The 5-4 win over S.C. State was the first time the Bucs reached that goal total since tallying five against Canisius in 2013.
Zari Hayes scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season against the Bulldogs, and
Dakota Fiedler scored twice to give her three goals in the last two games. Hayes has a team-high 12 points, one more than Fiedler, and
Bri Robinson has a team-best six assists, the most by a CSU player since 2009.
Hayes is tied for sixth in the Big South in goals, and Robinson is fifth in the league in assists.
Jazmin Gonzalez ranks second in the conference with 5.20 saves per game and has 169 in her career, just six shy of passing Molly Shawcross for seventh in school history.
Wednesday marks the second meeting in the series against Hampton, which began a year ago when the Pirates joined the Big South. CSU won that game at home by a score of 2-0.
