CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern battled Big South powerhouse Radford in a back-and-forth match before seizing momentum in the decisive fifth set for a 3-2 win Friday evening from the Buccaneer Fieldhouse by 24-26, 25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 15-8 set scores.
CSU (2-2) continued their start to conference play as the Bucs collected their second win in the Big South to begin the weekend while Radford dropped to 1-3.
This is the second year in a row that the Bucs have defeated the Highlanders in five sets.
Senior Brooke Monssen continued her torrid pace as she set collected a season-best 22 digs to pair with 21 kills in the win Friday. The 21-kill performance from Monssen marks her fifth time this season hitting for 20 or more kills and is her sixth double-double of 2019. Entering the match as the Big South leader in kills, Monssen now has 269 on the year.
Freshman setter Emilee Karelse dished out 50 assists in the victory, marking the second conference game where she has eclipsed 50 total. Karelse also served up a pair of service aces for the Bucs, both coming in a crucial fifth set win.
Paige Reagor continued hitting efficiently for the team as she hit for .379 with 13 kills. Reagor has now hit over .350 in three of her four conference matches. On the defensive side of the ball, she finished with a pair of solo blocks and five total.
Rachel Feggeler and Abby Vacha poured on offensive support for the Bucs with 15 and seven kills, respectively. This marks a season high for the freshman duo.
Per usual, Skylar Blackmon was all over the court with 17 digs. Blackmon was targeted 25 times off the serve and only tallied one error on the night. Macey LaPorte also aided in the Bucs' attack by tallying 16 digs of her own.
