Motley's late goal pushes CSU past Winthrop and into a tie for fourth in the Big South

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Peyton Motley scored the only goal of the game in the 78th minute to give Charleston Southern a 1-0 victory at Winthrop in a key Big South women's soccer contest.

The win moves the Buccaneers (8-4-2, 4-3-1 Big South) into a tie for fourth in the Big South with Campbell. The Bucs and Camels both have 13 points, trailing only Radford (21), Gardner-Webb (17) and Longwood (14), with the top four teams at the end of the regular season earning the right to host a tournament quarterfinal game the weekend of October 26-28. Winthrop dropped to 8-7-1 and 4-5 in the league.

The victory also clinched CSU's first winning season since going 9-8-2 in 2011.

How It Happened

  • The teams played to a scoreless tie at the half with Winthrop outshooting the Bucs 8-4 over the opening 45 minutes
  • After managing only one shot over the first 24 minutes of the second half, CSU began pushing the attack on the Winthrop goal
  • The Bucs fired seven shots in a span of seven minutes including three by Motley; her point blank shot in the 71st minute sailed just high
  • Finally in the 78th minute, a shot by Danielle Maggio was stopped by Eagle keeper Kelly Horan; Motley secured the rebound off the crossbar and tapped it in
  • CSU limited Winthrop to only three shots in the second half
