Bucs score early and defense shines in win over Winthrop to clinch Big South Tournament bid

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Sidney Doherty scored the only goal of the game just four minutes into the contest, and the Charleston Southern defense made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over Winthrop that clinched a berth in the Big South Tournament.

The Bucs improved to 3-4-1 in the Big South and with 10 points assured themselves a spot in the eight-team tournament field. CSU wraps up the regular season at home on Saturday against Radford before hitting the road for a quarterfinal game either October 27 or 28, depending on its opponent.

How It Happened

  • Following a Winthrop foul in the fourth minute, Grace Clark sent a ball into the box and a scramble ensued in front of the net. Doherty was able to nudge the ball to the right of Eagle goalkeeper Ashlynn Harris for her third goal of the season and sixth of her career.
  • CSU controlled play in the first half, holding an 8-3 advantage in shots, but neither team had a serious threat the remainder of the period.
  • The Eagles nearly tied it in the 63rd minute when they appeared to convert a corner kick into a goal but the score was negated by a whistle for offsides.
  • Kayla Robinson created a chance for herself in the 73rd minute when her long shot just missed finding the upper right corner of the goal and went wide.

Inside the Numbers

  • Winthrop outshot the Bucs 8-2 in the second half to finish with an overall margin of 11-10, but the CSU defense continued its outstanding play by recording its third shutout of the season. The Bucs have allowed a total of only 21 goals in 16 games on the year.
  • Alyssa Dellacqua finished with five saves and increased her season total to 89. In the process she became the fifth goalkeeper in CSU history with more than 200 career saves, finishing the day with 202.
  • The CSU back line continued its iron man ways, with Clark, Emilie Gilbert, Taylor Francis, Chloe Sherry and Juliana Barbaccia playing all 90 minutes.
  • The Bucs have won three and tied one in their last four meetings with Winthrop.

Quoting Eric Terrill
"Sid did a great job today winning balls all over the field and creating scoring opportunities, and Alyssa made several clutch saves on crosses when Winthrop started pressing us at the end. Winthrop had the better of play in the second half, but we have a really talented defensive team and they all came up huge today as they have all season."

Up Next
CSU will recognize seniors Lydia Frierson, Ally Gerthoffer and Kelly Hinkle prior to Saturday's 1 p.m. game against Radford.
