Bucs bump to 2-0 in Big South following 3-1 victory over Campbell

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Jordan Newman contributed to all three of Charleston Southern goals as the Buccaneers topped Campbell University on Wednesday afternoon at the CSU Soccer Field, 3-1.

The redshirt sophomore forward recorded her first collegiate multi-goal effort and first assist of the season, contributing a pass to Anna Sells for the second goal of the match.

"I'm super excited about what Jordan can do for us," said CSU head coach Eric Terrill.  "Her and Anna up top, when they fully attack, they are really tough to beat."

Campbell (6-5, 1-1) was able to get on the board first with a goal in the 11th minute.  Newman answered back in the 15th minute with an unassisted goal off of a steal at midfield, followed by a solid drive to the goal and shot to the back of the net.

"Jordan, in my opinion, was one of the best strikers I saw when we recruited her," Terrill said.  "Unfortunately, she came out of high school with a pretty severe shoulder injury and only played a few games her freshman year, and then red-shirted all of last year."

Newman's rough collegiate start hasn't dictated her finish, with the powerhouse player now at five goals for the season.

"She stuck with it, and we stuck with her, and obviously it's produced very good results for us," Terrill said.

The Buccaneer offense continued to put pressure on the Fighting Camels in the second half.  During the 73rd minute, Lydia Frierson set Newman up with cross from the left of the box that Newman headed into the goal.

"Being 5'2", I don't usually win balls out of the air," Newman said.  It was a beautiful ball from Lydia.  She placed it right on my head, I hardly had to move."

Newman earned her first assist of the year during the second goal of the match put up by Sells.  With just 1:30 left to play in the first half, Newman passed the ball to Erica Gazzani, who set up the shot with a pass ahead to Sells.  Sells capitalized on the play and buried the ball in the back of the net.

"Anna and Jordan are really starting to mesh well," Terrill said.  "Anna has had to take the brunt by herself for the past three years, but now with Jordan, it puts pressure on the other team's defense."

Sells goal gave the Bucs the go-ahead point and marked her sixth of the season, further solidifying the senior's spot at the top of the Big South leaderboard for most goals and points (13) on the season.

"I feel like Anna has progressed," Terrill said.  "She starting to have more confidence and relax a little bit.  Today was a much more relaxed performance from Anna, and think she did a great job."

Defensively in the net, Alyssa Dellacqua was tested by an aggressive Campbell offense consisting of 18 shots, including 10 shots on goal.  Dellacqua responded with nine saves for the match and held the Camels scoreless the entire second half.

Wednesday's victory marked the CSU's second consecutive Big South win at home (6-4, 2-0) and put the Bucs over a four-year hump of losing to the Camels.  Prior to today's play, CSU recorded their last win against Campbell at home in 2011.

After a six-game streak at home, Charleston Southern will go on the road to Radford University this weekend.   Kickoff between the Bucs and the Highlanders on the Big South Network is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.
