Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern was unable to rally back from a strong start put up by Vermont in Sunday's first half of game two of the Nike Challenge 2 series as the Buccaneers fell to the Catamounts, 3-1.
The Buccaneers (4-4) consistently put pressure on the Catamount (5-2-1) defense, out-shooting Vermont 19-10, but missed several opportunities to close the gap.
Jordan Newman led the Buccaneers with seven shots, carding CSU's only goal in the 60th minute of the match for the redshirt sophomore's third goal of the season. The Bucs had several other attempts with shots on goal recorded for Sidney Doherty, Anna Sells, Taylor Francis, Kelsey Fitzhugh and Kelly Hinkle.
Vermont goalkeeper Coco Speckmaier (5-2-1) had a strong performance in Sunday afternoon's match, recording six saves in the first half and another five in the second half for the most saves of the junior's season.
The Catamounts gained momentum early in the match, with Savana Yurick and Colby Snyder scoring back-to-back goals in the 30th and 31st minute that would go unanswered in the first half. VMU came out strong to start the second half, with Caitie Green putting up another goal in the 48th minute with a header off a corner kick.
Newman was able to put the Bucs on the board with a one dribble shot that came after a cross from Hinkle into the box. CSU tried to capture momentum after getting on the board, but Speckmaier was able to hold the Bucs to the solo goal, recording four saves in the final 30 minutes of the match.
CSU will look to gain their winning record back next weekend when they host UNC Asheville at the CSU Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
