Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – Kelly Hinkle scored the game-winning goal for her first goal of the season on Friday afternoon as CSU topped Jacksonville State 1-0 at CSU Soccer Field.
Taylor Francis set up the play with a cross into the box that was headed by Sells. The shot deflected off the JSU's goalkeeper's gloves, to Hinkle in front of an open net for the go-ahead goal in the 76th minute.
"We just kept fighting," said CSU head coach Eric Terrill said. "Anna just once again came up with a huge effort and Kelly was in the right place at the right time."
Alyssa Dellacqua (1-2) kept the Bucs in contention the entire game, with nine saves in the game for her first shutout of the season.
"I think this was a huge game for Dellacqua because her confidence hasn't been there because she had a couple of goals scored on her at Elon at the beginning and at College of Charleston," Terrill said. "We know that she's a very talented goalkeeper, but it all comes down to confidence."
It was a physical contest, with 16 total fouls for the match. Terrill was pleased with the Bucs effort to answer back to the strong effort put up by the Gamecocks.
"I think that we've had a little bit of an issue with teams that are really direct, and they were pretty direct on us today," said Terrill. "I think we tried to solve some of those issues and we held pretty good possession and created some pretty good opportunities for ourselves."
Jacksonville State had two opportunities to score in the last six minutes of the game, but Madison Carruthers' shot sailed wide and Nadia Plawiuk's attempt was saved by Dellacqua.
Charleston Southern remains home on Sunday as they welcome Vermont to the CSU Soccer Field for the second game of the Nike Challenge 2. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Catamounts is set for 1 p.m.
