Bucs drop 2-0 decision in 2016 opener at Elon

ELON, N.C. - Charleston Southern was held scoreless in their season debut on Friday afternoon as the Buccaneers fell on the road to Elon, 2-0.

Alyssa Dellacqua made three saves in goal, while Addie Bokelman had two shots on goal for the Bucs (0-1) on the afternoon at Rudd Field, but the Phoenix took advantage of two goals in a 19 second span to take the 2016 season opener for both teams.

The Buccaneers return home to the CSU Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon for their home opener. CSU hosts Jacksonville University with kickoff on the Big South Network set for 2 p.m.

Grace Bennett and Sydney Schilling both scored for Elon in the 65th minute to pace the Phoenix to the win. Bennett scored off the pass from Susannah Anderson at the 64:16 mark to give Elon the 1-0 lead. Schilling found the back of the net at the 64:35 mark to double the Phoenix lead.

Bokelman led the Bucs' efforts on the afternoon with two shots, including the first Bucs' shot of the 2016 season at the 43:57 mark in the first half. She added a shot on target in the 80th minute, but her attempt was stopped by Elon goalkeeper Taylor Mohr.

The Bucs pressed late in the contest with Erica Gazzani and Kelly Hinkle both firing on net late, but Gazzani's effort was blocked, while Hinkle's effort was corralled by Mohr in the 90th minute.

Mohr recorded the shutout in the net stopping all three CSU shots on goal.
