Buccaneers drop three-set decision to Winthrop on Senior Night

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Addison Kaderli recorded a double-double to lead Charleston Southern in its final home match of the 2016 season, but it was not enough to guide the Buccaneers past visiting Winthrop on Saturday night in the Buccaneer Field House. The Eagles topped the Bucs in straight sets, 25-23, 25-19, 25-23.

CSU (12-18, 7-7) recognized 2016 seniors Connor Malone and Taylor Allman prior to the match and Malone paced the Bucs with a team-high five total blocks on the night against the Eagles (13-16, 4-9) in her final match in front of the CSU faithful. Winthrop's Brianna Gray's 10 kills paced an Eagles attack that proved to be too much for the Bucs in CSU's second loss to WU on the season.

Kaderli paced the Bucs with 14 kills and 10 digs in the loss. The sophomore outside hitter had a team-best .214 hitting percentage to pace the Bucs from the floor. Naiomi Rivera set up the offense with 27 assists, while Madison Martin was the defensive leader with 17 digs.

Gray was Winthrop's lone player with double-digits in the kills' category with 10 on the night as the Eagles hit .129 as a team in the match. Siani Yamaguchi was the assist leader with 17, while Carlie Skelton paced the backline efforts with 17 digs.

The teams battled through 13 ties and eight lead changes in the first set with CSU building a 23-21 lead late following a Martin ace and a Hannah Western kill. Gray evened the set with back-to-back kills before a pair of CSU attack errors ended the four-point swing that gave the Eagles the 25-23 set win.

Kaderli's fifth kill of the second set tied the frame up at 15-15 as CSU fought to stay close to the Eagles. Kelsey Schroll answered with a kill to give the Eagles the advantage as Winthrop went up 21-16 following back-to-back CSU errors. Malone added a late kill for the Bucs, but it was not enough to end a Winthrop stretch that included six of the final seven points as the Eagles took the 25-19 set win.

CSU trailed 23-19 late in the third set before CSU mounted a comeback on Logan Windsor's service. Western started a 4-0 stretch with a kill that evened the frame at 23-23. Windsor added an ace and Klein connected on a solo block before a Winthrop error tied the score. The Eagles ended the CSU rally and took the final two points on a pair of Buccaneers errors to close out the match.

Charleston Southern closes out the 2016 season on the road next weekend as the Buccaneers travel to Radford and Liberty. CSU takes on the Highlanders on Friday night to open the trip with first serve in the Dedmon Center set for 7 p.m.
