Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Charleston Southern fell in their Big South opener on Wednesday night to host Campbell at the Eakes Athletics Complex, 1-0.
The Camels (6-3, 1-0) scored in the 37th minute as Marissa Hartert finished off the cross from Ashley Clark to put Campbell ahead. The Buccaneers were unable to connect on the tying goal in the final minutes as CSU fell to 2-3-2, 0-1 in Big South play on the season.
Anna Sells had a team-high four shots including a header in the first 20 minutes of the contest that nearly put the Bucs ahead early to pace the CSU offense.
Liz Amanda Brown finished the match with six saves to lead the Bucs defense, while Alexis Connors finished stopped both CSU shots on goal in recording the shutout.
Sells took the pass and nearly headed the shot at the 17:28 mark, but her attempt sailed wide left to keep the match scoreless early on.
Hartert put the Camels in the lead at the 36:03 mark, receiving the pass from Ashley Clark across the middle to finish from four yards out. Murita Storey started the play with a cross to Clark who redirected the shot into the box for the Hartert put-away.
The Bucs threatened to tie the match up early in the second half, but back-to-back corner kicks in the 51st minute were cleared by the Campbell defense. Sells' header in the 78th minute was saved by Connors to close out CSU's final scoring opportunity.
Charleston Southern remains on the road this weekend as the Buccaneers travel to Lynchburg, Va., on Saturday afternoon, taking on Liberty in Big South Conference play. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Flames is set for 4 p.m.
