CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern ripped off 34 points and 224 yards of offense in the second quarter to roll to a 47-7 win over ETSU at Buccaneer Field on Thursday night.
CSU (2-1) scored 13 points over the first 1:13 of the second quarter to break a scoreless tie, and never looked back in a battle of the Bucs. Jamey Chadwell, a former quarterback and coach at ETSU (0-3), led CSU to a win over his alma mater for his 20th victory in three years at the helm.
Chadwell's quarterback, redshirt sophomore Kyle Copeland, delivered a career day to lead CSU offensively. Copeland threw for a career-high 177 yards and a touchdown, and piloted the Bucs' offense to the endzone on all five of their second quarter series. Senior Nathan Perera had five catches and a touchdown during the second quarter onslaught, and finished with six grabs for 92 yards.
"We weren't very happy with the way we came out and played in the first quarter," Chadwell said. "We finally started executing and doing some things. We got a couple of touchdowns before the end of the half and really put things in our control."
"Hopefully, we can come out and start every game like we did in the second quarter," Chadwell continued. "Right now, we are just playing average and trying to get by but we are better than that. It is a little frustrating. When these guys play like they are capable of playing, we can be a pretty good team. We aren't there yet because we aren't consistent but we have those flashes where we know that it is there."
CSU's defense held ETSU to just 106 yards of offense through three quarters, and tallied three sacks and nine tackles for loss. Linebacker Zane Cruz intercepted a pass to set up CSU's second touchdown of the night, while safety Larenzo Mathis picked off a pass and returned it 87 yards for a touchdown to account for the final margin.
CSU junior Mike Holloway got the scoring started with a 10-yard touchdown run off an option pitch. That followed a 25-yard burst on the speedster's first touch of the season. Cruz picked off a Nick Sexton pass on ETSU's ensuing possession, and CSU pushed its lead to 13-0 on the next snap as Copeland found Perera on a 16-yard hookup.
On a night where CSU spread the wealth in the running game, junior Alan Barnwell carried the load on the next drive to swell the advantage to 20-0. Barnwell provided the spark with runs of 12 and 18 yards, before Holloway finished it off from three yards out. CSU rushed for 223 yards and six yards per carry in total, with no back going over 50 yards (Barnwell).
A short sky kick recovered by Ray Rowe then gave the Bucs a short field and another touchdown, with freshman Kelan Fraise reaching the endzone for the third time of the young campaign.
Perera got CSU going with catches of 18 and seven yards on the final scoring march of the first half. Fellow receiver Jared Scotland scampered for 39 yards to take the ball to the goal line, and Darius Hammond capped the surge with a one-yard touchdown.
CSU goes for its third straight win over intra-city rival, The Citadel, next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
