Buccaneers come up short against Gardner-Webb, 62-56

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Gardner-Webb used a late second half run to hold off host Charleston Southern on Tuesday night inside the Buc Dome as the Buccaneers fell to the Runnin' Bulldogs at home in Big South Conference action, 62-56.

CSU built a 10 point lead at the 12:51 mark in the second half on a three-pointer by Alyssa Mann, but the Bucs struggled over the next 9:01 as Gardner-Webb went on a 15-0 run before Rochelle Brophy connected on the layup to put the score at 51-48. CSU kept the game within one possession late as Tatum Jarvis banked in her fifth three-pointer of the game with 30 seconds remaining, but the Bucs last two shots fell short as the Runnin' Bulldogs closed out the game from the free throw line in the win.

Jarvis led the Bucs from the floor with 16 points as the sophomore connected on a career-high five three-pointers in the game. Her previous career-high was four which she accomplished five times in her career and three times already this season with the last coming on February 2nd against UNC Asheville. She added six rebounds and a team-high three steals from the floor.

Alise Karlsone added nine points and five rebounds, while Mann had five points and five assists for the Bucs as CSU falls to the Runnin' Bulldogs for the second time this season. Monique Maximilien added seven points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots from the bench in the loss.

Candace Brown and Olivia Parker both had double-doubles for the visiting Runnin' Bulldogs with Brown finishing the night with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Parker had 15 points and 17 boards. Brown added five steals from the floor in the win.

CSU falls to 5-19, 1-14 overall in the Big South, while Gardner-Webb improves to 11-14, 7-9.

The Bucs and Runnin' Bulldogs battled through a tough first half as the teams were tied six times and swapped the lead 12 times over the first 20 minutes.

Gardner-Webb held the largest lead by either side in the first half as the Runnin' Bulldogs used a 10-2 run to take a 27-20 lead with 6:46 remaining. Brown started the run with a jumper and Tierra Huntsman scored the remaining eight points capping off the run with a three-pointer from the right wing.

CSU answered with three straight three-pointers as Karlsone, Shauntavia Dobson and Alecia Hardy all connected on triples to retake the lead at 29-27. The teams swapped baskets the rest of the way with Karlsone hitting a layup with 30 seconds remaining to send both sides into the break tied 31-31.

The Buccaneers had a quick start to the second half in scoring the first six points as Karlsone, Maximilien and Mann all hit baskets over the first four minutes to go up 37-31.

CSU's lead reached 10 points at the 12:51 mark as Mann connected on her first three-pointer of the game to go up 46-36. Mann's triple was the Bucs last shot made from the floor until the 3:50 mark as the GWU defense helped the Runnin' Bulldogs go on a 15-0 run before Rochelle Brophy ended the stretch with a layup to put the score at 53-48.

CSU kept the game within striking distance as Maximilien connected on a free throw with 1:30 remaining to put the score at 57-53. Jessica Heilig connected on a layup on the ensuing GWU possession before Jarvis banked in a three-pointer from the left wing to put the score at 59-56 with 30 seconds remaining. However, that was as far as the Bucs were able to get as GWU hit three of their last four free throws to close out the game.

CSU remains at home as the Buccaneers host Radford in Big South Conference play inside the Buc Dome on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Highlanders is set for 2 p.m.
