Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - Chelsea Frankeny scored a first half goal and Liz-Amanda Brown and the Charleston Southern defense took over the rest of the way as the Buccaneers topped visiting North Florida on Friday afternoon at the CSU Soccer Field, 1-0.
Frankeny took the long pass into the box from Marissa Lavatori and dribbled her way past North Florida's Megan Dorsey to put the Bucs ahead 1-0 in the 36th minute of the game. The CSU defense took over the rest of the way as Brown, the reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Week, made a career-high 10 saves in picking up her second consecutive shutout victory.
"We've seen Marissa be really creative, and we know what type of player Chelsea Frankeny is," said CSU head coach Eric Terrill. "When she gets free and we can get her the ball, she really connects off of those passes. Marissa did that today."
Charleston Southern improves to 4-1 overall on the 2014 season with the win, while North Florida falls to 0-5.
"I'm happy we won," commented Terrill. "Today, the team really stepped up and didn't show any cracks in the armor. UNF is a really good team. The fact that we were able to hold on to a 1-0 win was more important than any of the other wins we've had to this point this season."
Frankeny scored her second goal of the season at the 35:30 mark, breaking a scoreless tie before half as the CSU junior received the long pass through the middle by Lavatori. The freshman forward put the ball at Frankeny's feet at the top of the box and Frankeny took one quick dribble around an advancing Dorsey before tapping the shot into the net from six yards out to put the Bucs ahead 1-0.
In an aggressive and physical second half which saw three yellow cards distributed to the teams, North Florida pressured the CSU defense as six different Osprey players combined to outshoot the Bucs 10-2 over the final 45 minutes of play.
However, time and again, Brown came up big for the Bucs in the goal box, making seven saves down the stretch, including three on free kicks from Lanie Keating to keep the Ospreys off the board and seal the CSU victory.
"Liz-Amanda has been great," Terrill said. "We knew she was super athletic, but some of the stuff she does in the game is crazy. She stopped some long kicks, she got the ball down field quickly and she kicked it down field. She played a great game today. She is just a freshman but has been playing way above her age for us this season and she plays better under pressure."
CSU remains at home this weekend as the Bucs close out the Nike Tournament on Sunday afternoon against Richmond. Kickoff at the CSU Soccer Field between the Bucs and the Spiders is set for 1 p.m.
