Box Score RADFORD, Va. - Charleston Southern fell on the road in double-overtime to Radford on Saturday evening in Cupp Stadium, as the Highlanders held off the Buccaneers' comeback attempt as CSU fell in Big South action, 3-2.
CSU's Emma Faubert sent the game into overtime with her goal in the 83rd minute, tying the contest up at 2-2. After a scoreless first overtime period however, Kara Wade put in the golden goal for the Highlanders off the assist from Asyia Mitchell in the 103rd minute to clinch the Radford victory.
CSU falls to 4-6 overall, 0-2 in Big South play on the season, while Radford improves to 5-4-1, 2-0 in conference action with the win.
Erica Gazzani opened up the scoring for the Bucs in the contest with her third goal of the season to stake CSU to the early 1-0 lead. The sophomore midfielder headed in Faubert's corner kick at the 18:36 mark to put the Bucs ahead early.
CSU's lead would remain until the 63rd minute of play where Tori Donahue scored on a header off of Jordan Lundin's corner kick as Radford tied the match up at the 62:33 mark. Jasmine Sampson followed shortly after off the assist from Mitchell to give the Highlanders their first lead of the contest at the 74:13 mark.
Faubert gave the Bucs a chance late as Chelsea Phillips' shot deflected off of the senior midfielder and into the net, beating Radford goalkeeper Katie McCormick at the 82:48 mark to knot the match up at 2-2.
The Bucs threatened to put the game away before the overtime period as Kelly Hinkle, Chelsea Frankeny and Phillips all had shots over the final seven minutes, but neither team was able to score in sending the game to extra time.
Sophomore Kelsey Fitzhugh, in her first collegiate appearance in goal, made two saves for the Bucs in the first overtime period to keep the Highlanders off the board, but she was unable to stop Wade's finisher on the first shot of the second overtime frame as the Highlanders took the victory.
Liz-Amanda Brown finished the contest with 10 saves for the Bucs in goal, while Fitzhugh had three saves in 35 minutes' action between the pipes. McCormick had seven saves for the Highlanders.
CSU remains on the road this week in Big South play as the Bucs travel to UNC Asheville on Wednesday afternoon. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Bulldogs is set for 1 p.m.
