Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina State ripped off a 22-0 run after Charleston Southern scored the game's first basket, and the Wolfpack rolled to an 86-50 victory at Reynolds Coliseum on Friday night. N.C. State held CSU scoreless for over seven minutes during that stretch and led by 26 points at halftime and as many as 44 late in the second half.
N.C. State (8-1) looked the part of a team that has advanced to the NCAA Tournament each of the last three seasons. Freshman Caleb Martin sparked the early outburst and led the way with 17 points. N.C. State sharpshooter Ralston Turner added 17 as well as the Wolfpack shot 49 percent from the floor. Defensively, N.C. State limited Charleston Southern (5-3) to 30.5 percent shooting, including just a 2-for-21 clip from three-point range.
CSU was led by 14 points from Cedrick Bowen, and nine points and seven assists by Saah Nimley. The Bucs could never generate a rhythm against N.C. State's swarming defense, and were also out-rebounded 50-37. The Wolfpack forced 14 turnovers as well, turning that into a 20-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
The contest was the first of a challenging three-game road swing for CSU. Counting N.C. State, the Bucs play three opponents in a ten-day stretch that are now a combined 24-3. CSU is back in action on Wednesday to face Wofford, before jetting to Fort Collins to meet a 9-0 Colorado State team on December 22.
"Give a lot of credit to N.C. State because that was a really impressive performance," CSU head coach Barclay Radebaugh said afterward. "They were really well prepared and defended us as well as anyone has. They kept us in front, guarded their yard and really took us out of what we wanted to do. Offensively, they moved the ball very well and made shots. They're a very good basketball team and showed it tonight."
Arlon Harper connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key to give CSU a 3-0 lead 38 seconds into play. The Bucs would not score again until the 12:17 mark of the first half, as N.C. State assumed control from the outset. Martin gave N.C. State a jolt in his first career start, as the freshman scored 10 points in the opening flurry and hit his first six shots – including three threes – en route to tallying 15 by intermission.
N.C. State pushed its lead as high as 44-15 on a Turner triple with 2:40 left in the first half, and took a 46-20 lead into halftime. The Wolfpack were buoyed by 14-0 and 13-5 edges in points off turnovers and second chance points, respectively in the opening twenty minutes.
CSU had a brief successful offensive stretch to start the second half, as Nimley twice found Bowen for baskets in close. N.C. State continued to stifle CSU's potent, attack, though, forcing the Bucs into 10-of-33 shooting – 1-of-14 from beyond the arc – in the second half.
The N.C. State margin reached 82-38 on an Anthony Cat Barber three late in the shot clock, before Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried cleared his bench.
"I expect us to regroup, rest tomorrow, and get back after it and start preparing for a really good Wofford team on Wednesday," Radebaugh said of the Bucs' mindset. "This is a tough stretch and we need to improve throughout it."
Tipoff against Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C. is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
