Buccaneers fall to Campbell's golden goal in double overtime, 2-1

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern fell in double overtime to Campbell on Wednesday afternoon at the CSU Soccer Field, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Camels in Big South Conference play.

Erica Gazzani evened the score at 1-1 for the Bucs in the 56th minute with her fourth goal of the season, but Campbell out-shot CSU 5-2 in the overtime periods before Ashley Clark scored the golden goal in the 109th minute to give the Camels the win.

"Erica has been clutch for us lately and given us the chance to tie games and win games," said CSU head coach Eric Terrill. "Anna [Sells] and Kelsey [Fitzhugh] are getting good looks too and they are all starting to come together. We've got three kids who can legitimately finish off a cross and score, and that's huge in our game."

Caitlin Cody reached another milestone during her career with the Buccaneers during the contest, recording her 300th career save at CSU in the 13th minute of the contest. The redshirt senior goalkeeper from Knoxville, Tenn. stopped 10 shots during the contest in becoming only the second CSU player and 10th player in Big South Conference history to achieve that mark.

"Caitlin has always been a phenomenal shot stopper for us throughout her career," said Terrill. "She did a great job out there today and has worked really hard to get back to where she is this season."

The Bucs fall to 5-7-1 on the season, 1-3-1 in Big South action, while Campbell improves to 4-5-3, 2-1-2 in conference play on the year.

"Today was a tough loss, but I saw some good things as well," commented Terrill. "We are coming together more and we're playing better, but we aren't necessarily seeing those results. We pressed really well, but we didn't really finish when we had opportunities with the ball. It's a little frustrating, but we'll get there."

Campbell opened the scoring in the 20th minute of the match as Shelby Denkert scored off the assist from Kellsey Costello-Mays and Murita Storey. Storey played the ball across to Costello-Mays, who touched it to the left side of the box where Denkert was able to finish from 12 yards giving the Camels the 1-0 lead at the 19:37 mark.

Gazzani evened the score early in the second half as the sophomore midfielder scored for the third time in the past four games, going up and over the defense with a header in the 56th minute to tie the match up at 1-1. Gazzani's goal came off of Emma Faubert's corner kick at the 55:42 mark to knot the game up.

The Bucs and Camels battled the rest of the way through regulation but neither team was able to score the go-ahead goal, sending the match into overtime.

In the first overtime period, Campbell had two of their shot attempts thwarted by Cody, and had another attempt called back for offside, sending the teams to the second overtime.

The Bucs came out firing in the second overtime period as Chelsey Frankeny's shot at the 101:49 mark was corralled by CU goalkeeper Alexis Connors.

With time winding down, Clark took the pass from Costello-Mays and scored the golden goal in the 109th minute, taking the long pass ahead before finishing from 14 yards out ending the contest in favor of the visitors.

Charleston Southern outshot the Camels 21-20, but Connors proved up to the task in the net for the Camels with nine saves. The Bucs and Camels matched each other with seven corner kicks apiece.

CSU is back in action on the road this weekend, traveling to Florence, S.C. to take on Francis Marion in non-conference action. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Patriots on Saturday night at the Hartzler Soccer Field is set for 7 p.m.
