Bucs fall to Gardner-Webb, 2-1; Cody moves into 6th all-time in the Big South in career saves

Box Score

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Caitlin Cody passed another mark in the Big South record books and Lydia Frierson scored her third goal of the season on Saturday evening, but Charleston Southern was unable to comeback from two first half Gardner-Webb goals as the Buccaneers fell on the road to the Runnin' Bulldogs, 2-1.

Cody moved into sixth all-time in the Big South women's soccer record books on Saturday night at Greene-Harbison Field as the redshirt senior goalkeeper passed Nadine Henchcliffe (UMBC, 1993-95) and Karen Blocker (Liberty, 2008-12) with her 340th career save midway through the second half. Cody finished the match with four saves to sit in sole possession of sixth place all-time in Big South history heading into Tuesday's final match.

While Cody continued her march in the record books, Frierson nearly brought the Bucs back in the match as the freshman midfielder found the back of the net for the second game in a row and third in the past four matches to halve the Gardner-Webb lead to 2-1. Frierson scored on a scramble in front of the back post off of Kelly Hinkle's corner kick at the 61:36 mark to give the Bucs a chance to break back into the game.

The Buccaneers fall to 5-12-1, 1-7-1 in Big South play on the season with the loss, while Gardner-Webb improves to 8-8-2, 4-3-2 in conference action with the victory.

CSU put the first shots on goal to open the match as Anna Sells' attempt in the sixth minute was turned away by GWU goalkeeper Amy Schmitt. Brooke Kelly answered with the shot a minute for the Runnin' Bulldogs, but Cody recorded the save as the teams fired back and forth early in the action.

Justine Ibarra broke the seal on the net in the 33rd minute for Gardner-Webb, taking the pass from Jessica Casper and connecting on the shot to put the Runnin' Bulldogs ahead 1-0. Casper collected the clearance attempt and found Ibarra for the go-ahead goal.

Just before halftime, Brandi Arey doubled the Gardner-Webb lead off the assist from Ashley Carmean in the 41st minute. Arey took the pass and found the back of the net past Cody to give GWU the 2-0 lead at the 40:39 mark.

Frierson took one back for the Bucs in the 62nd minute on Hinkle's second corner kick attempt as the freshman forward won the scramble at the back post and found the back of the net past GWU goalkeeper Krista Chauvin.

CSU had several opportunities to tie the match late, but Hinkle's shot went wide and Erica Gazzani's attempt was blocked by the GWU defense. Hinkle's corner kick in the 83rd minute was CSU's last attempt, but the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to prevent the tying goal in closing out the Big South win.

Charleston Southern returns home on Tuesday afternoon for the Bucs regular season finale as CSU hosts Coastal Carolina at the CSU Soccer Field. The Bucs will recognize all seven of their 2014-15 women's soccer seniors during halftime of the contest against the Chanticleers. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Chants is set for 4 p.m.
