Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - High Point's Becca Lisson scored on a scramble in front of the net in the 89th minute as Charleston Southern fell in a tightly-contested battle in Big South Conference play to the visiting Panthers on Wednesday afternoon, 2-1.
"We've had a few tough losses this season and today was no different," commented CSU head coach Eric Terrill. "It wasn't a lack of effort or anything; the kids played their hearts out. I'm really proud of the team and what they did today. It is unfortunate that at the end of the game today, High Point was able to get a goal off a scrum in the box."
Lydia Frierson scored her second goal of the season as the freshman midfielder tied the match up at 1-1 heading into the break, but the Buccaneers were unable to build off of the momentum as High Point outshot CSU 27-6 overall in the match, 17-1 in the second half in the Bucs loss.
"[Lydia's goal at the end of the first half] gave us a ton of hope. That's something we have been missing lately," Terrill said. "Her goal gave us a spark - her play has given us a spark lately. We knew coming in she was going to be great for us. She was on the fringe for a good part of the season, but she has really stepped up her game and taken advantage of the playing time she has been getting lately. She's hustling all of the time, and that's how she earned that goal today."
Caitlin Cody continued her march up the Big South career record books with nine saves in the match. Cody, now with 337 career saves, sits three saves away from passing Nadine Henchcliffe (UMBC, 1993-95) and Karen Blocker (Liberty, 2008-12) from moving into sixth all-time in Big South Conference history.
"Caitlin Cody made some huge saves for us today," commented Terrill. "She has showed how tough she is by continuing to battle in spite of the injuries she has had. In the time I've been here, she has had the best hands out of any keeper I've seen. She has two big giant pillows attached to her arms. Some of the balls that were played at her today were just crushed and she just played them with the soft hands that she has. She made it look easier than it actually was."
The Bucs fell to 5-11-1, 1-6-1 in Big South play with the loss, while High Point improved to 8-4-3, 5-2-1 in conference action with the win.
CSU took the first three shots of the match with Anna Sells nearly putting the Bucs ahead in the eighth minute of the match. Sells launched a left-footed shot from 18 yards out that clanged off the crossbar over High Point goalkeeper Jordan Beets and was deflected out of the net to keep the match tied at 0-0 early.
High Point put across the first goal of the contest in the 11th minute off the set play from the corner kick by Becca Rolfe. Her pass from the left corner was lofted into the box to the head of Burch, who headed the shot inside the near post and into the net at the 10:23 mark to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead.
With time winding down in the second half, CSU caught a break as Beets misplayed the ball inside the box inside the final minute. Like she did last week against Winthrop, Frierson out-raced the defender and tapped the ball into the open net at the 44:45 mark to tie the match up at 1-1.
The second half saw High Point control possession on CSU's side of the field for a majority of the half. The Bucs defense turned away several close shot attempts with Cody making a great kick-save on the shot from Kai-Lin Hernandez in the 69th minute as the redshirt-senior goalkeeper stopped four of the five shots on goal in the period.
The Panthers were able to put the go-ahead goal in the net in the 89th minute as Taylor Romano headed the Rolfe corner kick to Lisson, who redirected it over the CSU defender and into the net at the 88:28 mark to clinch the game as the Bucs fell to the Panthers in Big South play at the CSU Soccer Field.
Alex Persiani recorded the win in goal for High Point, with a clean sheet in the second half while not facing a CSU shot on goal.
Charleston Southern returns to the road this weekend as the Bucs travel to Green-Harbison Stadium and Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on Gardner-Webb. Kickoff in the Saturday Big South matchup is set for 7 p.m.
