Box Score

FLORENCE, S.C. - Three second half Francis Marion goals offset Anna Sells' third career multi-goal game as Charleston Southern fell on the road in non-conference action to the Patriots on Saturday night at Hartzler Soccer Field, 3-2.

Sells scored her team-leading eighth and ninth goals in the 2014 season, connecting on one goal in each half to pace CSU's efforts, but the Patriots were led by two second half goals by Chanel Harris to record the home win.

CSU falls to 5-8-1 overall with the loss, while Francis Marion improves to 2-10 overall with the victory.

Gina Thomas took the opening shot of the first half for the Bucs in the second minute of the contest, but CSU was outshot 10-4 over the opening 45 minutes as the Patriots kept CSU goalkeeper Caitlin Cody busy. Cody recorded all five of her saves in the opening half to keep the Patriots off the scoreboard.

Sells put the Bucs ahead in the first half as the sophomore forward took the over the top pass from Stephanie Hand down the right sideline. Sells dribbled into the box and finished with her left foot from 12 yards out, over FMU goalkeeper Taylor O'Berry at the 25:10 mark to give CSU the 1-0 lead.

The 1-0 lead carried throughout the remainder of the first half, but FMU responded less than four minutes into the second half as Elizabeth Asare scored from 10 yards out off the assist from Harris at the 48:32 mark.

The Asare goal started a 3-0 run as Harris added the go-ahead goal in the 58th minute and an insurance goal in the 72nd minute to give FMU the 3-1 lead. Harris scored at the 57:22 mark on the 30 yard shot off the assist from Arianna Pierner as FMU capitalized off a failed CSU clearance attempt. Brittany Smith assisted on the second Harris goal, lofting the corner kick into the box at the 71:44 mark for the header finish.

CSU took one back with under 10 minutes to play as Sells scored unassisted at the 81:22 mark to halve the deficit. Sells dribbled in and finished from 11 yards out to put the score at 3-2, setting up a furious CSU late charge.

The Bucs recorded seven of the last eight shots in the match coming over the final 15 minutes. However, CSU's final change ended in the last minute as the Bucs were called offside with just over 40 seconds to play as the clock ran out on the comeback attempt.

Charleston Southern remains on the road this week as the Bucs travel to Rock Hill, S.C. and Winthrop University on Wednesday evening. Kickoff in the Big South matchup between the Bucs and the Eagles at Eagle Field is set for 6 p.m.
