Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. - Charleston Southern fell in their 2013 Big South opener on the road as Liberty was able to make a late first half goal stand as the Buccaneers fell on Wednesday afternoon, 1-0.
Toni Lashley had three shots and a shot on goal late for the Bucs as CSU falls to 3-5-1 overall and 0-1 in Big South Conference play on the season. Liberty improves to 6-3, 1-0 in conference action with the win.
Chelsea Phillips, Chloe Urig and Chelsea Frankeny also recorded shots on goal for the Buccaneers in the match, but were all turned away by Liberty's Holly Van Noord as the Flames' goalkeeper recorded her conference leading sixth shutout of the season.
CSU goalkeeper Dana McLaughlin nearly proved to be her equal in the contest, facing 29 Liberty shots and recording six saves, but a goal by Brittany Aanderud slipped past in the 41st minute and proved to be the difference in the contest as the Flames topped the Bucs.
Liberty applied the pressure early in the first half, outshooting the Buccaneers 17-3 over the period with Aanderud launching four shots in the first 16 minutes before CSU put their first attempt toward the net. Urig's opening shot was directed toward the next at the 16:08 mark, but was saved by Van Noord to keep the game at 0-0.
Late in the first half, as a shot by Phillips was saved, while Allison Lewis' header went wide, Aanderud connected on her second goal of the season at the 40:56 mark off the pass from Casey Norris. Her shot, from outside the box, sailed into the back of the net past McLaughlin to stake the Flames to the 1-0 halftime lead.
The second half saw the Flames again press the attack in outshooting the Buccaneers 12-4 over the period, but CSU had several chances to even the score with Lashley connecting on the opening shot of the half at the 47:27 mark and again drilled a shot toward the goal at the 57:31 mark, but both attempts sailed wide to leave the Bucs trailing 1-0.
Frankeny added a shot on goal at the 78:06 mark but her attempt was saved by Van Noord, while Lashley's final attempt at the 82:53 mark was corralled in front of the net as the Bucs were unable to send the game into overtime in falling 1-0.
Charleston Southern is back in action this weekend as the Bucs host Radford. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
