Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Charleston Southern's furious comeback fell short as the Buccaneers were unable to overcome a three goal second half deficit in Big South Conference play on Wednesday evening as CSU fell at host Campbell, 3-2.
Chloe Urig scored her first goal of the 2013 season, while Allison Lewis connected on her fourth of the year to lead the Bucs offense on the day, but Campbell took advantage of a span of three goals over 10 minutes as the Camels recorded their first Big South win of the season.
Charleston Southern falls to 4-8-1, 1-4 in conference action, while Campbell improves to 5-7, 1-4 overall in the Big South with the win.
The teams battled through a tight 45 minutes to open the game with Campbell holding the 10-5 shot advantage in the first half of the contest.
Emma Faubert opened up the scoring opportunities for the Bucs less than two minutes into the contest, firing a shot on goal, but her attempt was saved by Campbell's Alexis Connors. Alexis Prada connected on the Camels' first shot on goal at the 13:35 mark, but her attempt was also turned away as CSU's Dana McLaughlin proved up to the challenge as both teams struggled to score early.
With the score tied up heading into the final minute of the half, Payton Ormsby spotted a crease in the CSU defense and made the Buccaneers pay at the 44:04 mark for the opening goal of the contest. Ormsby received the pass from Lilja Bjork and pushed it past McLaughlin to send the Camels into the halftime break holding the 1-0 lead.
Caitlin Schneider came out firing with two shots on goal a minute into the second half, while Toni Lashley drilled a shot directly at Connors at the 47:20 mark as the teams squared off in a fast-paced final 45 minutes.
Kellsey Costello-Mays added to the Camels lead at the 48:16 mark with a goal directly off the corner kick, curving the ball into the far side of the net to put Campbell ahead 2-0. Five minutes later, Campbell's lead again increased as Kine Thorsvik scored off of her own rebound on the shot at the 53:59 lead to give the Camels the commanding 3-0 advantage.
Less than a minute later though, the momentum swung out of Campbell's hands and over to the Buccaneers as a foul committed inside the goal box gave CSU their first penalty kick of the 2013 season. Urig drove the ball into the back of the net at the 54:40 mark to take one back for the Bucs, putting the score at 3-1 in favor of the Camels.
Kelsey Fitzhugh fired a shot wide for the Buccaneers as the ball stayed around midfield for the next 20 minutes before Charleston Southern cut further into the Campbell lead, this time with Lewis finding the back of the net for the Bucs. The play was set up by a cross from Chelsea Phillips as the sophomore forward sent the ball into the box from the right side where it was touched and shot by Lewis at the 75:49 mark to narrow the margin to 3-2.
The Buccaneers continued to press in their attempt to complete the comeback, controlling the ball on Campbell's side of the field over the final 15 minutes, making multiple runs on the CU defense as Phillips' attempt at the tying goal sailed wide at the 87:25 mark. Several late opportunities also fell short for the Bucs as Charleston Southern suffered their fourth conference loss of the season with the 3-2 final score.
Dana McLaughlin continued to add to her Big South leading total with nine saves on the evening, facing 22 Campbell shots in the contest, while Connors had three saves on 10 CSU shots during the game.
