Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - Chelsea Frankeny put Charleston Southern ahead early with a first half goal and Toni Lashley and Chelsea Phillips added scores in the second half as a stifling CSU defense lifted the Bucs over visiting Winthrop on Wednesday afternoon at Patriots Point, 3-0.
CSU goalkeeper Caitlin Cody recorded her second shutout of the season with the Buccaneers' defense stopping the Winthrop offensive attack time and again with timely clears as the Eagles managed 10 shots in the match with only two on target. Cody recorded both saves as Charleston Southern recorded their second consecutive Big South win.
The Bucs improve to 6-8-1, 3-4 in Big South play with the victory, while Winthrop falls to 9-2-1, 5-2 overall in the conference standings with the loss.
Frankeny recorded her fifth goal of the season in the 24th minute to lead a Buccaneers early attack which saw Charleston Southern carry a 9-1 shot advantage throughout the first 25 minutes of the match. The CSU offense continued to possess the ball throughout the majority of the contest, with Lashley adding an insurance goal in the 57th minute, while Phillips clinched the Bucs win with her fourth goal of the season in the 72nd minute to close out the scoring in the match.
Winthrop's Taylor Coleman opened up the contest with the first shot of the game, coming at the 2:14 mark, but the next nine shots came from the foot of the Buccaneers with WU goalkeeper Amelia Henderson proving up to the task making five saves during the stretch to keep the match scoreless.
At the 23:43 mark, Frankeny pushed in her fifth goal of the season, receiving the long pass down the right sideline. With full control of the ball, the CSU sophomore forward slipped past the Winthrop defense and cut back into the box, putting her shot in the middle of the net with her left foot to give Charleston Southern the 1-0 lead.
Winthrop put pressure on the Charleston Southern defense late in the first half, with four shots in the final eight minutes as Samantha Prytulak, Eden Ralph and Emily Crick all fired in the direction of the Buccaneers goal. Cody however, made a pair of saves to keep the shutout intact and send the teams into the break with CSU leading 1-0.
Play was concentrated around the middle of the field for the first 10 minutes of the second half before Charleston Southern caught a break in the 57th minute as Allison Lewis spotted a gap in the Winthrop defense and found Lashley alone in the goal box. The pass ahead to Lashley led to a one-on-one with Henderson, and the CSU senior forward connected on a bouncing shot into the lower right corner of the net to double the Bucs lead at 2-0 at the 56:56 mark in the game.
The Bucs added their final goal of the contest with 71:58 on the clock with Phillips connecting on her fourth score of the season as the sophomore forward carried the ball up the field 40 yards before uncorking a low line drive shot from 25 yards out. Her shot carried over a leaping Henderson and tucked inside the crossbar to put CSU ahead 3-0.
Ashley Herndon's shot at the 75:04 mark was the final shot by either team in the contest as the Buccaneers closed out the 3-0 win at Patriots Point.
Charleston Southern returns to the road this weekend as the Buccaneers travel to Farmville, Va., to take on Longwood University in Big South play. Kickoff between CSU and the Lancers is set for 2 p.m.
