Lancers top Lady Bucs in Big South play, 2-0

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Kelsey Pardue scored the first goal of the contest and assisted on another as visiting Longwood topped Charleston Southern in Big South Conference play on Thursday afternoon at Buccaneer Field, 2-0.

Caitlin Cody recorded eight saves for the Lady Bucs (3-6-1, 1-2 BSC) on the afternoon as the visiting Lancers (8-3, 3-0 BSC) outshot Charleston Southern 20-10 in the game in recording the conference victory.

Allison Lewis opened up the game for Charleston Southern, recording the first shot by either team in the contest, but her attempt at the 2:37 mark in the game sailed over the crossbar to keep the teams scoreless early.

Longwood responded by peppering the net over the next 15 minutes of the contest as Pardue, Lindsey Ottavio, Natalie Massey and Samantha Phillips challenged Cody in the net, but the redshirt sophomore keeper and the CSU defense proved up to the task, keeping the Lancers off the scoreboard until the 18th minute of the contest when Pardue spotted a gap in the Charleston Southern defense.

Kelsey MacDonald played a through ball into the box, crossing from left to the upper right corner of the box. Pardue collected the pass, took one dribble and then first into the lower right corner, just out of the reach of a diving Cody to put Longwood up 1-0 at the 17:32 mark in the game.

Gina Cox followed with a shot two minutes later, challenging the Longwood defense inside the box, but the freshman midfielder's attempt was blocked to the side to keep the Lancers ahead.

In the closing minutes of the first half, Longwood again threatened the net as Chelsea Walter and Kylie Dyer fired at the goal before Haylea Witz found an opening in the net for her second goal of the season. Witz received the pass from Pardue on the right side of the box and her shot deflected through Cody's gloves and into the net to give Longwood the 2-0 advantage in the first half.

Emma Faubert attempted to put the Buccaneers on the board in the final five minutes of the half, firing a shot on net from 20 yards out, but her attempt through traffic was collected by Kyra Byron as the teams headed into the break with Longwood leading 2-0.

Lewis and Cox came out firing in the second half for Charleston Southern, with Lewis firing at the 53:28 mark, while Cox had shot attempts in the 56th and 58th minutes, but neither was able to connected to put the Lady Bucs on the board.

Rebecca Hollstegge and Hali Singleton also challenged in the second half with Hollstegge shots from the top of the box at the 58:24 mark and the 73:28 mark sailing high, while Singleton's attempt was collected by Byron to keep the Lady Bucs scoreless.

Charleston Southern's final scoring attempt came with 10 minutes to play as Chelsea Frankeny lined up a shot from the top of the box, but Byron knocked down and covered up the attempt and Longwood held possession over the final minutes as the Lancers topped the Lady Bucs, 2-0.

CSU remains at home in Big South Conference play as Liberty University comes to Buccaneer Field on Saturday, September 29th. Kickoff between the Lady Bucs and the Flames is set for 4 p.m.
